Is it necessary to remove the DEM to do the unlock, or is all done thru the OB port?

The unlock is done directly on the DME, not via the OBD port. The tune can be applied later via the OBD port after the unlock has been completed.

The User manual describe this.

You work with the connectors of the DME (remove all vehicle harness ones, connect the 2 from the tool) but it doesn't need to be removed from the vehicle.

Is it necessary after the first time to access the DME every time you need to restore the factory settings to lets say take the car in for it's service appointments?

If the laptop you use crashes do you lose the ability to reflash?

Well I called Missionperformance and after talking with a most knowledgeable and helpful gentleman-Chris_I went ahead and ordered a Mission Link. He explained everything and answered all my questions to the point I now feel very comfortable tackling this project.
The wait begins

23109VC.......... Legit questions, but isn't your car already out of warranty? If so, why are these issues still important to you?

RTPenland, that is a very good point that we have been discussing internally and with other tuning platform admins. As weinerbarn mentioned, you cant just copy one DME image to another vehicle as that will render the car none-op. Also, data can not be extracted as the backups are encrypted. Also, the backup images are linked to specific serial number of DME and can not be flashed on DMEs with different serial numbers unless we provide "specialty" package to allow that (case of DME cloning).

Now for a little different side of the coin: With flashback license, for the most part, it is 100% possible to take a backup of your DME once it is tuned. With that a user can create "collections" of different tunes to switch to at will. Now, that opens doors wide open for potential fraud (think about refund a tune after taking flashback of it), however we are currently working with few tuning companies and allowing them to insert "blocks" in code that M-Link will pickup and thus not perform a read out. That is still in infancy state and has not posed too many issues, but of course being looked at.
I am curious if you are exploring adding features such as speed limiter removal in addition to unlocking and backup?

Many piggyback users are happy with their tuning choice but the 130mph limiter often hold back the cars without a flash tune. Would it be possible to have a speed limiter removal with unlock/backup so people can continue to use piggyback but remove the limiter?

I think some users would be willing to pay for such a speed limiter removal, even those with stock tunes.

Just a little update: Appologies for not being here to respond to some question as we were working hard to get all the ordered units out. As of today, everything is shipped out and we are finally back to being in stock!

The device is married to the vehicle once used. We will create a new product on the site for the license transfer that will allow you to use it on one vehicle, then purchase and use the license transfer to fully reset the M-Link and be able to use it on the next vehicle of your choice. That is intended for M-link resale (secondhand market) however can be used for your case.
Thank you for the response, I just put in an order for the M-Link! Do you have any window on what the price of that transfer feature would be?
