Battery Management error

I keep getting a "Battery Management" error.

I've attached a photo of the error. Anyone knows what it is / what causes this?

The error goes away once you start the engine. It comes back every few days or so.

I'll be reaching our to the dealer but was curious how common this was.

Sorry to sound dumb, I don't know where to look to see the software version.

Where do I find that?

Go to car settings.
Software update.
Should be right there.

I had a very similar error. After trying to pass this off on my radar detector they determined that there was a slow leak from one of the systems not shutting down properly. Ended up replacing the BDC (body domain controller) and that has fixed it. If nothing else you will get the software updated to 11/2022.

If you have anything connected - dash cam, detector - disconnect before taking it in. Anything customer installed is the low hanging fruit for a technician.

I also have this. Very annoying and BMW couldn’t find anything.

Did you get this resolved?

Yeah ok, I looked under car/settings. I don't have "Software update " as an option there.

I have a 2020 G20 M340ix

Mine is doing the same thing.

I stored it in oct 2022 and use a Ctek 4 amp charger. The problem then appeared.

I disconnected the Ctek and bought a 15 amp charger. I plugged it under the hood at the post. Voltmeter indicating 12.8 volt. If i disconnect the charger for 12 hours, it shows 80% of battery remaining. Plug it back then the charger raise up to 14.3 volt and get to 100%

Will see the reaction of the car when I take it out of the storage.

Rear defrost flashing all the time, also lost AC and temperature control. What a mess.

I had installed the m track module. Since I removed it I haven’t had this occur since. I’m going to keep it out for a while longer to be sure that is the cause, but it looks like additional electronics seem to be the most common route cause.

Finally raised the issue with my dealership and took the car in.

They could not find a fault. I told them and showed them a screenshot of the error message and said I had received that quite a number of times over the past month or two.

They kept the car overnight with a battery monitor (or something) to check battery drain. They could not find any.

BMW required the dealer to do more testing etc, but the dealership just decided to replace the main battery at no cost to me. So I got a new battery. Nice. My cars purchase date was June 2020, so the battery is three years old. At least I got a new battery :-)

It's only been a few days. But I' will see over the coming weeks if the error has disappeared.

Ok well, guess the new battery didn't fix it. Today I got the error again. I'll leave it for a while and see if it happens repeatedly. If it does I'll take it back to dealer.

Of course a new battery didn't fix it. A lazy 'fix' by the dealer.

The warning is pretty specific, there is an issue preventing the vehicle going into sleep mode, or a current draw above 'sleeping' closed circuit thresholds.

Yes, we both know that. But I am just happy to get a new battery out of it. They'll still have to sort out and fix :-)

See my post above. I took it to dealer under warranty. They were a bit lazy and went through some steps but could not find the issue. Instead of going through the more detailed procedures they just went ahead and replaced the main battery. Great for me as the battery was 3 years old and I got a new one for free.

That was several months ago. In the first week it did come up again. But it never happened after that - no issue since.

Essentially this error refers to an electrical leak when the car is off. Any aftermarket items connected to power can trigger this if they draw any power in standby mode.

So start by turning off/removing any after market items connected to power and see if that stops the issue - it probably will in most instances. It wasn't the case with mine as I didn't have anything after market connected to power.

Thanks - Yeah Im all bone stock no after market stuff. I guess Ill let the dealer take a look and push for the battery swap. Whats weird is Ive also started getting random support from driver assistance restricted errors on the idrive8 screen yesterday and today while driving. So after the battery management error came up after start up a few days ago then went away - now the driver assistanance error popper up twice while the car was mobile.

Hope its just a battery glitch- going to take it to the dealer next week.

Update:

Diagnosed in ISTA as "Faulty sleep in parking status".

No service bulletins so dealer opened a case with BMW Germany. They asked for AVR test and parasitic draw test. All appeared normal.

Dealer did a full reprogramming and released the car to monitor.

So will keep an eye out - weird one.

My dealer was able to determine that there was a small current draw (.4amp) when the car was sleeping. Dealer opened a case with BMW and ended up replacing the BDC module. No issues since then.

had the same issue on my previous 2023 M340i. Picked up late OCT 2022, and basically started storage mode almost immediately after. A few short stop/starts to move the vehicle for mobile PPF installation. All other times on BMW CTEK charger. Dealer charged the battery and informed some setting had to be reset. Shortly after the vehicle sold to new owner.

I was getting this same error every day. I noticed the auto hold and e-brake was on even when the car was turned off and locked. I knew something wasn't going into deep sleep. Turns out it was related to this SIB 61 01 23. I was offered RSU 3/2023.67 which includes Recall of automatic transmission/EGS software, but the update would never install. It would say "You will be notified when the upgrade can be installed" in which it never did. Went to the dealer and they updated the software to 07/2023.33

Yes!!! Every time I walked into the garage or sensed light the vehicle would wake up. Actuators turned on and almost always the infotainment turned on. Thanks for sharing the SIB.
