That represents a pretty big shift in strategy for both Alpina and BMW if it is indeed true. I don't recall Alpina ever transplanting an M engine into their products (they did do the Alpina V8 Roadster, but the Z8 it was based on already had a M engine to begin with), and if they have done it, it would not have been in recent times. And to debut their vehicle with the S58 before the BMW M product based on the same Series vehicle has even been shown? That's very surprising if true.

Furthermore, they already had the F32 B4 S with the N55 up to ~440hp, which is more than the base S55. So it's hard to believe that they would not take a similar approach with the B58.

I'm not saying the above sources are wrong, but it's a little difficult to believe. I wonder if Alpina has confirmed this firsthand?

Not at launch they didn't they had 410ps vs the 431ps of the standard M3/4, the S came later once the CP M3/4 was released.

B4 410ps - M4 431ps
B4S 440ps - M4 CP 450ps

As the forth coming M3/4 will be around the same outputs as the current X3/4M, M is as per usual always a bit more than Alpina so the new B3 continues this trend.

Sorry, I was probably a little bit unclear. The point I was trying to make with that particular comment had nothing to do with relative product specs and release dates. I was merely saying that since they were able to get 440hp safely from the N55 (which happened to bring the total above the S55) then they should have no problem getting 460hp safely from the B58 O1, which comes from the factory with 382hp already.

I still have doubts this vehicle is powered by an S58. It would be nice to see something official from Alpina.

I believe Car Throttle reports it as being a twin-turbo converted B58. If you take a look at engine close up pics, you see 2 intake inlets going from the 1 air box passenger side. Not so sure that is s58 or not tho.

even Hartge and ACS have / did.

I'm saying that and I was there ( in the correct era ) also when Alpina first landed on Earth and more specifically - here in USA nor is it my first Alpina picnic. ðŸ™ðŸ¼

You're post jogged my memory, so I did some digging.

Indeed, it would appear that history is repeating itself. Alpina's N55 engine also features a twin-turbo setup where the stock BMW N55 is single turbo. In fact, it was reported back at the time of its release that they bought the tooling from BMW:

https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/...ic/first-drive

So, it is not at all a stretch that their B58 would also feature a twin-turbo setup. That makes a heck of a lot more sense to me than an S58. I suspect that's what is powering this new B3. Hopefully Alpina will provide confirmation soon.

Having driven the B58 and S58, I can categorically state that the B58 sounds so much better.
So if Alpina have created a twin turbo B58, hopefully that too will sound nicer than the S58...

Calm down...personally, I think that although that style have been around forever, they are what makes an Alpina. The other style I have seen on some modern Alpinas, just doesn't do it for me.

One downside of the classic wheels, is they must be a pig to clean...

sorry OP

They've always " seemed " or appeared (?) heavy to me. Perhaps just their aesthetic .. I just find their wheels to be so period looking and of that period I think their best looks were on body codes such as E, not so much F and now G.
I'm calm. It's all subjective no matter what anyhow.
I love the classics just as much as anyone else I just kinda wished they'd evolved a bit is all. Like a really neat 3 piece w step lips or some crazy new ANKRY ( well maybe DIAL that back ) Forged Monoblock or something perhaps just a little ' daring ' ?
For once ?

Perhaps somewhere between these two ?

So the ones on the drivers side are the Alpina classics and the ones on the passenger side are called Alpina dynamics. They were introduced on the Alpina roadster (z8).

It is based on the B58.

Alpina would not use an M engine, also because it has not been developed with the 8AT transmission. Twin turbo setup as for the last generation, strengthened cooling system mainly.
