Any official word on whether this gen2 mild hybrid will allow creeping - since it is now built into the transmission and delivers more torque? As someone who enjoys the sounds of an ICE engine but also appreciates silence in stop-and-go traffic, my only disappointment with the gen1 system is that it fires up the engine even to creep just a few feet.

Yes there is reference to limited motion with engine off. I'll look for the specific reference from BMW.

As an example... BMW Media information X5 & X6 02/2023 Page 17

What is more, the mild hybrid system can additionally be used for driving purely on electric power at very low speeds in the BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X6 xDrive40i models.

as an ex-M340 owner who loved the 2021 motor (with the belt mild hybrid)
and a current B58M2 owner (2023 x7)

I would say the newer motor is a torque monster even in the heavy x7 so i think it will only add to the M340 having that muscle car "pickup" feel around town and off the line

I am a bit sadden to see the M340/M440 etc not getting an upgraded hp variant vs the x7/x5/new5/new7. Just to layer on an extra level of specialness... 400hp /398 tq would have been a nice spec sheet number... while functionally i dont think it would have been noticeable

The electric motor is integrated into the ZF transmission by replacing the TC, but Gen 1 still has a separate electric motor/starter + belt outside of the ZF box to assist on cold start and regeneration.

The Gen 2 sounds like a much improved version of Gen 1.

It feels that BMW won't bring Gen 2 MH to G20 330i, but if they do, the 330i may likely hold off model 3 non-performance at stop lights.

We should be very happy that the M340i and M440i are not going the 4 cylinder way of the Mercedes AMG C43.

I cant understand who would buy a 2023 AMG C43 4 cylinder 9 speed transmission when you can get the B58 with 8 speed ZF for less money too!

i thought not having port injection was to improve fuel economy

i guess we will know more when we have more details

So if anyone’s watched the XM reviews, there’s mention of a hybrid motor in the transmission. And a slight lag when flooring it during transition from hybrid to engine.

Based on the C&D review, the motor is sitting inside the transmission.

The eight-speed automatic transmission controlled by this shifter remains the excellent ZF 8HP, enhanced by the 48-volt hybrid system that's spreading through the BMW lineup. A starter-generator connected to the engine's crankshaft and residing in the transmission housing provides as much as 147 pound-feet of torque but only about 13 horsepower to supplement the combustion engine. Electrical power comes from a small 48-volt battery under the trunk floor, where the previous 12-volt battery was mounted.

My interpretation of Gen2/TU2 is that the 12V pinion starter of Gen 1 shown in this article is no longer needed for Gen2.

"The 48-volt system offers advantages in many arenas. One of the biggest advantages is in the revised automatic engine start/stop feature. The first “cold” start is always handled by the traditional 12-volt pinion starter motor. But if the engine is above 60 degrees Celsius (140° F), the 48-volt system will handling starting the car. This allows for less emissions, a 20% quicker start, and less disruptive vibrations and sounds for the vehicle’s occupants."

EDIT: Jalopnik has another article similar to the C&D one saying 2023 M340i gets a new transmission with the 48V motor inside, so it appears Gen1's 12V and 48V starters are both outside the transmission.

Someone who doesn't like the LCI changes, perhaps. I am seriously considering the C43 after four BMWs in a row. I love my 330i, ordered exactly as I wanted with every tech and performance option. When I consider the ergonomic lapses and missing features of the LCI against the impressive new C-class interior, I am hard pressed to choose an M340i. I've only driven the C300, which feels floaty (even AMG line) and has a soft brake pedal. If the C43 improves in those areas along with the added power, I might be sold.
