2020 Cadillac CT5 vs BMW 330i xDrive Review by Throttle House
This week James and Thomas consider the question: Do you buy the well-loved 3-Series, or the entirely new Cadillac CT5 Sport? They both cost over 50,000 Canadian, they both have AWD and they both have four cylinders! Let's see which one comes out on top...

3-Series won due to overall better all-roundness and smoother powertrain and a tad more engaging. However, the Cadillac CT5 presents a good start, one which in V trim, possibly could beat the M340i.

Cadillac was onto to something when the 2013 ATS and 2014 CTS came. However they fizzled fast. More of the same with this new Cadillac. Watch the sales figures...they won't even be competitive. Cadillac should stick to SUV's.

Exactly. This is a repeat from a few years ago. These will sit on lots, while 3 series will be selling extremely well.

However, it does seem that Cadillac does still have mojo when it comes to driving dynamics, at least in the form of the new and upcoming CT5-V, and the later high-performance model, just not the base 4-cylinder. The new V model has been receiving glowing reviews for its driving dynamics and handling. Of course, this will likely not effect sales though because no one wants a fun to drive car anymore, but its good to know that they can still make a good to drive car though. Personally, I can't wait to see the CT5 w/ the LT4 engine and a possible manual transmission.

The very cheapness of the Cadillac interiors should prevent it from being compared to real luxury cars

The problem is they are happily meeting about all the sales available in the niche market. V is stronger than ever. Perhaps why they decided to make the CT5 CT5-V and the yet unnamed V proper line. The CT5-V being S6 and M340i tier. The problem is the base model sales aren't anything exciting. They do sell many crossovers though in 2019. Brand sales are up. Just not in the areas you and I care about. |

Lets face it Cadillac, Jaguar, Genesis, Lexus they all try to break into the 6 cylinder sports sedan market--but never cack the German Trio of M340i/S4/AMG C43.
For many reasons, the Germans just do it better. |

I would argue Infiniti for a while cracked the code with the G35/37 and then lost it with the Q50.

The weirdest thing for me about that review was that the 330i they had didn’t have paddle shifters I didn’t know there were 330is without paddle shifts!

This is very typical of GM, and the end result will be the very same: another Cadillac that won't sell even with thousands on the hood.
They'll do a couple things right and but the attention to detail is lacking due to GM's inherent corporate structure. They have a budget and will throw some nice materials in the interior, but the general switchgear, panel fitment, etc. are lackluster. You can easily see in this video how wide the panel gaps are in the CT5's interior. Then they'll do the steering well but totally screw up the powertrain. The overall engineering of the vehicle is inherently inferior. Throw in terrible residuals, no brand equity especially among millennials, poor reliability, and a declining sedan market and you have the perfect recipe for another disaster for the Cadillac division. I guarantee it.

Yup. I did notice those rims too. Though a 3 series without paddle shifters seem blasphemous to me.

How many of you have actually sat in a CT5? While I wouldn't assume anything, everyone is saying the CT5 is a big jump up in interior quality compared to the CTS. We know for sure both the CTS and CT5 (and ATS and CT4) are better dynamically than the 3 series and 5 series. My huge Chevy SS is a better driver's car than the 3 series. (MagneRide is amazing). Who cares if it sells well or it doesn't sell well? Do you guys have stock in BMW or GM?
If the CT4-V or CT5-V Blackwing comes in a manual and has improved interior quality, I will be taking a serious look at those cars. The grille on the G80... shudder. |

I remember when i got my 2013 328i F30 m-sport.... m-sport didn't even come with paddle shifters. You had to pay extra for sport automatic! At least now in the US its included.

My F25 X3 doesn't have paddle shifters. Idk if it has a sport transmission. But yes. I'm glad they're now standard on the american cars!
