Speed limiter - downhill

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I've noticed that speed limiter doesn't break the car when it runs downhill, leading to speeds higher than the limit. Is that a known feature, and if it is, why is it implemented this way? My previous car (Infiniti) was breaking while running downhill to keep the limit.

Are you referring to the cruise control? In the past BMWs would brake going downhill to keep the speed set in the cruise control.

My 330e does brake when going downhill with cruise control, but never used the speed limiter alone

Mine will occasionally go over the speed limit with the speed limiter on when going down hill....the HUD goes red and (I think) flashes.

The car will brake automatically so it does not exceed the set speed (not the speed limit) when cruise control on.

If you have Driver Assist Plus (or is it Pro?) activated and the speed limiter fully activated (i.e. The button held down until the green tick appears in HUD) the car will slow down, using the brakes if necessary, when entering a new lower speed limit area.

The coasting mode will decouple the transmission and exceed the limiter when in eco pro

Mine holds the limit till I push the accelerator. Resetting speed makes the car brake again.

I'm referring to the speed limiter (LIM button on the steering wheel). Cruise control keeps the desired speed indeed, but inside the city I prefer to use speed limiter, it is just more convenient to me. I also use it in Sport/Comfort modes, so that should not be the result of the transmission decoupling from the engine.

I've found this in the manual:
Quote:
If the set speed limit is reached or unintentionally
exceeded, such as when driving downhill, the vehicle
is not actively braked.
Seems like such behavior is by design. Now I'm just wondering why.

Edit: Found some info that Merc has/had a patent for a speed limiter that utilizes brakes. Makes sense, as my Infiniti (Q30) was based on a Merc platform.
