Reliability/ Maintenance on M340 - buying used, MY 2020

Hello folks,

I'm back to this forum after ~5 years and lookin to buy a 2020 M340i. Sold my 981 Cayman since I need the rear seats now, at least for the foreseeable future. I had a couple of e92 with N54 engine when I was last here.

Coming to my question: how reliable has this car been, esp. MY 2020? I will most probably be getting a CPO or after-market warranty unless there's enough evidence that these are solid cars now. For the price range I'm looking at I think I might getting a 30k to 50k miles car. What are your suggestions? What to look for when buying used? I will try to do an inspection before I buy. Any long-term maintenance issues?

Cheers!

Very solid car... the b58 has been proven to be a staple like the N54.

My only qualm is with the used car market is its probably close to a new M340i cost... if youre looking to spend 50k might as well get a lower option m340i as new?

Is it that close to getting a new one? I thought the new ones would be in the upper 60s. I'll compare them...

I've seen new go for 59K... granted thats basically no options. Mine was 61K and I got adaptive suspension / Shadowline. Missed out on a few things but oh well. Car is a blast to drive.

Outstandingly reliable. Having driven a 335xi with the N54, the M340i and its B58 engine are a vast improvement in every way for me. Engine components are placed strategically with great care towards avoiding parts being exposed to heat unnecessarily. Redundant heat shielding is used throughout. Better HPFP, injectors, and more reliable mechanical water pump.

All this reliability shockingly comes without any tradeoffs, the engine is more powerful and more fuel efficient.

This video compares the two and was one of the main factors in leading me towards the M340i:

I bought my 2022 M340ix with 5 miles on it and it’s currently at 4,500 miles and it’s been trouble free. I hope it stays that way too, the iDrive system is phenomenal, the power deliver is great and I easily get 380-390 miles on the tank when driven on eco mode and average 80mph ( this is my daily commuter for work).

Launch control is awesome, the car has tremendous grip and power.

That’s great! This is what I want to hear - been through those HPFPs, injectors, water pumps in the past.

That said, is extended warranty a must or nice to have?
I’m thinking it’s nice to have at least for the electronics. What say?

I don’t have the budget for 60k but spending close to 50k on a 2 year old, ~40k miles car doesn’t make sense, even if I could afford it, am I correct?

I went with a new order because of the used prices, the nice used examples go for high 50's or even low 60's, to get towards 50k you need to get a higher mileage/lower optioned one and I wasn't interested in that. Seems like a 5-10k difference between used and new depending on mileage/year/options which for me was close enough to go with new.

Also I don't trust off-lease M or M-sport cars, lord only knows how the last guy drove it and treated it lol

I haven't come across any reliability issues with these cars except a couple instances of the mild hybrid belt slipping and so throwing some scary looking alerts due to the vibration damper spitting some fluid on it.

These cars are pretty damn nice specced out minimally. The new perforated sensatec is really nice so no need to spec the vernasca leather, can shuffle around a few options and end up with around 56-57k (I'd spec the adaptive suspension then work around that)

Great points, but makes me think now - if this is the car I want to buy now. My initial budget car was the M240i and if I decide to spend more then it’s a Cayman S (981) or M2. I chose the M340i for the practicality and the drive + power (and my wife hated how my son and I leave her and go for drives in my 981). Looks like I have start all over again 😞

the new m240i is pretty nice, if your son is still on the smaller side he can fit in the back then the wifey rides shotgun

badaga ,

I have a 2020 M340 that I got in July '19. Car has 35,000 miles on it and has been super reliable; I've only had to change tires (thankfully getting rid of run flats) and regular maintenance

The B58 coupled with the ZF transmission is smooth as silk and extremely reliable

Hope that helps

I have a 2020 M340ix and have only had one issue when a check light popped up one morning then disappeared. Had it checked by BMW and it was a fault with the control module for the LSD which they replaced under warranty. Apart from this it has been solid!

He’s 5’8” and growing 😞 Wife is the shortest one now 😉

I think I can try to convince her if it narrows down to only M240.

Thanks for the reply guys. I’m hearing all positives regarding the reliability.

I’ll shop around to see if I get a low mileage M340 at the right price (justifiable compared to a new one).

As always, happy to connect with fellow members and appreciate the quick responses. I’ll update once I pick one.

A few more things to consider other than the long term maintenance. B58 and Zf as others say are more reliable than before.

1)The m340i stock standard exhaust on MY2020 is louder than MY2020+
2)Newer m340i for MY 2021+ have lots of restricted/de contented features, packages due to the supply chain and pandemic issues.

Good luck on your search.

If you are able to find used 2020 m340i with all the bells and whistles (Executive/Premium package/Track handling package/driver's assistance professional) you win!

Used shoppers are gunna have a hell of a time with these cars years down the line because the options were coming and going as supply permitted, it's not like you can just see the model year and know what it has. Still happening now too, '22 ordered a few weeks ago have everything, now they won't have the HK surround or laser lights. The adaptive suspension was touch and go for most of the '21 year I believe

If you look at the 2020s coming up on the used market (there are quite a few), you'll find that there are a significant number of them that have between 12,000 - 20,000 on the odometer and are fairly well spec'd cars.

Still pricey by used standards, but mid $50s very well equipped with low miles.

Were the market "normal", these cars would be selling in the high $40s.

Good to know on the exhaust note.
Thanks!

Yeah, I'm searching for max $50 with at least the adaptive suspension . I think the adaptive suspension option automatically adds few other nice options.

One a side note - I might up the budget if the wifey gets an offer at a top tech company which she's currently interviewing for. Fingers crossed!

Not impossible, but you'll have a hard time finding something with the adaptive suspension and reasonable miles at $50k. Most that fit that criteria are $55k and up.

I agree.

Is there a way to tell if the car has an adaptive suspension by looking at the interior pics? Because some of the online posts doesn't mention it if if it had.

Looks like there's the Adaptive button on the center console - am I right?
