2021 dme lock

In Cybersecurity, humans are usually (always) the flaw in the system. No one is sitting in some server farm trying to brute force RSA. (LOL Kaspersky) We are just waiting for someone to mess up or for an exploit to be found. The bigger problem I see is how BMW will react once it is defeated. (if it ever is), what's to stop BMW from remotely pushing a validated flash and relocking your DME once your checksum reports an anomaly? Where is the SIM Card located and what happens if you remove it?

Subscribed for updates! In the meantime I've fitted stage 1 Burger tuning box, makes a big difference.

I feel once the shine wears on the M3/M4, like magic, the DME will unlock. It makes sense that they do this as why spend 20-25 grand more for an M3/M4 when the 340/440 does all if not more with minimal mods and an OBD tune.

Well you have great timing in that I am heading back to MP tomorrow (Wednesday) with my Son in his 328 to have another DP installed (last time we visited my son showed up with the wrong part) and a mild flash update to his car.

Anyhoo....I will ask the Man in person re unlock. Other thing I'm curious about is the rumor that MP is going to bringing to market an IOS based tuning app

For reference I picked up my 340 in June of 2017 (obviously they were available before this date) and it wasn't until I think August of 2018 that the first remote unlock/flash option became available (and I jumped on it).

disclaimer: my dates may be off a wee bit in that I didn't take the time to go back and look up the exact dates - but I think I'm close

Didn't it take like 3-4 years for the first F30 340i's to be cracked?

Look at the C8s. People have been trying to crack those for 2 years without any luck. And that group seems more motivated so who knows how long it will take for our G20s.

Dont lose faith... the aftermarket makes way too much money selling tunes to not crack the DME to be able to receive a tune.

Its just a matter of time. Be optimistic. I would bet it happens before this year is over.

Im currently running a JB4+ until a DME unlock is available. Once that is available I will switch over for a flash tune

The OTA updates have really borked the modding community. While the added security is needed to prevent nefarious activities, it has really left those who enjoy after market performance upgrades with little option past an in-line hardware device.

What we are waiting for is some sort of exploit that cannot be reversed via OTA update like the bench unlocking method of previous generations. If there is no viable exploit, then the only other hope is that BMW provides trusted partners with the keys to push performance updates. Imagine buying a tune and once purchased the trusted third party can push it to your car. Sans those, the DME will never be brute force decrypted. If it could, we have some real problems past tuning cars to deal with.

I know those exploitable DMEs of the early M340 can pull high 10s with $5000 or less in mods. That is insane. INSANE. I hope they figure it out soon as I don't think the JB4 or the AC Schnitzer inlines are going to get us there.

Genuine question, can't they just swap out the DME with an older one, and code it to your VIN? I'm sure if they are unlocked then they can also solve the FSC issues that would naturally crop up.

I thought about this, and I'm fairly sure I read somewhere that it won't work that way. If I find the reply/post about this I'll post it back here. I don't think it was an M340i though, it was one of the A91 Supras I read it awhile back.
