HUD Query - 2D vs 3D
Hoping someone can clear this up quite quickly.
The spec for HUD shows: ********* The Head-Up Display projects information relevant to the journey directly into your field of vision on the windscreen thereby allowing you to fully concentrate on driving. It has an automatic brightness control, 3D graphics for junction view (realistic display of turns and intersections) and a user-friendly adjustment by means of the iDrive Controller. The large-scale 11.5" display with 7° x 3.5° opening angle and a throw of approx. 2.5 m displays navigation information in different display modes, speed, country-specific display of traffic signs in the relevant colours, warning information from driver assistance systems, situational display of entertainment and communication lists (two-line list display), Drive Performance Control contents, modes (via coloured highlighting, BMW EfficientDynamics functional contents and check control messages with 3D graphics. On SE and Sport models, the instrument cluster changes from analogue to a semi-digital variation. In addition, the Head-Up Display is 2D rather than 3D. The display of full content is dependent on optional equipment ordered. ********* Unless I’m missing something, mine looks 2D. So the map and route appears like it does in the digital dash. The note above states SE and Sports models is 2D rather than 3D. I thought mine being an M Model it should have 3D? Don’t know if anyone with HUD can clear this up? I used the BMW UK configurator and basically built my car spec, under Tech Pack it then shows the details above.

I get the impression the 3D refers to perspective view like you get on nav screens. ie 2D is top down, ie a flat, plan view where parallel lanes/roads will stay parallel and 3D is perspective, ie the same parallel lines will look like they merge together somewhere into the distance.
Not to be confused with the 3D effect you get on telly's etc.

Maybe I was expecting to see something similar to this.
I’m going to see if I can somehow get a pic of what mine looks like. Assuming it’s all as it should be anyway |

My car is fairly recent (Jan 2021), and has all of the plus packs with no deletions.
I don't think I'd describe any of the stuff that the HUD displays as 3D, with the possible exception of the little green road leading to the car in front with ACC. It's all distinctly 2D. But very clear - if they tarted up the graphics it would probably be a distraction. |
