So driving my niece who is 3 in a car seat along the motorway, she reaches over and opens the rear door?!
I have lock doors after pulling away selected so should this be possible?!

Is there not a child lock on the back doors?

Yeah there are child locks, going to put them on now, guess I never thought with all the safety systems that the car has, it will still let you jump out at 70mph?!😆

Should be I'd have thought. There is a window lock out on the driver's door window control panel I believe?

Can the rear door pulls be locked out through iDrive or with levers on the door mechanisms themselves?

Theres a manual switch on the rear doors. Use the key in your fob to switch it to child lock, takes two seconds.

Done that now, my issue is more that you can open the doors at 70mph, I mean with all the safety features modern cars have, how is that right?!

You mean the section on child locks/safety switches where it states 'there might be times it is advisable to secure the rear doors'?

Because at other times it's okay to be able to open the doors at 70mph?!

Any adult that is stupid enough to pull the handle twice... do you want them in the back of your car?

But again, my issue isn't with adults being able to open the rear doors, it's with a 3 year old being able to do so

Given all the safety features on modern cars how it is still possible to open the doors on a motorway?

Why have something that locks the doors when you pull away but they can still be opened by double pulling the handle?

I have had a child in the front seat before on a long journey as it was just me and them, with no child lock they could have jumped for it!

I'm all for taking responsibility but I can't see why you should be able to open the doors at 70mph?!

I thought that was answered with the child locks.

I'm sure there are reasons why it doesn't deadlock 100%, while driving. I wonder if there are regulations which may apply. I've heard the case for not wanting the car locked at all, the "what ifs" in an accident situation.

In an accident situation the doors unlock anyway but the doors locking when you drive away is a security feature rather than a safety one.
In all my years I've never read of anyone opening a door at 70mph and falling out but I guess it's possible. In order for it to be a real danger though our hapless passenger would need to pull the door handle twice, undo or disentangle themselves from the seatbelt, push open the door against a 70mph slipstream, and then tumble out. To be frank I can see why this somewhat unlikely scenario hasn't been discussed all that often.

I was just about to mention the fact that it won't be easy to open a door at 70mph, but @xenon beat me to it.

If you have kids that don’t no better, put them in the back and engage child locks.

Just think of all the Hollywood films that would be unrealistic if you couldn’t open a door under any circumstances at 70mph!
