At a crossroads with M340. Love the car, but the market is telling me to unload. Like everyone probably, I've contemplated new G80 M3 and it's monster S58 engine, but personally I can't commit to it's appearance. I want to love it, I just don't. Not too mention, my dealership has 8 people on M3 waiting list with orders and won't even take another order at the moment.
Then came the 2022 X3M Competition. Shares the S58 motor and provides a little more practicality. I lug around 2 small kids so it's an easier sell to the wife. Not too mention she thinks the M340 seats are terrible (she has no clue). Appointment at dealership at the end of the month for software update and oil change. We'll see how it goes (if I don't place order sooner). Anyone else made this switch or at least considered sedan to SAV? (If I trade M340 I will have quality parts to sell on here).

I was in the same boat. My lease is up in 6 months and wanted a M5 but I would be 7th on the list and even longer for M3. This was at Passport BMW and they have no idea how long it would take to get. I ended up buying out my lease and selling my car to a used car dealer and ordering a Plaid which will be here next Friday.

It’s amazing how many people lease this car…
Anyhow, I did the opposite. I traded in a SUV for this car. Totally enough space and practical for having kids. I wanted the performance as well, which for an SUV will be much more costly and forever compromised (in my opinion). Plus our family already has a minivan for those trips where much more space is needed |

There's an issue with the S58 engine so you may want to go over to the M thread and read about the recall. People are pissed they can't seem to get the M engines working without issues.

The fact that nothing else is available yet you can still buy a Tesla speaks volumes. It’s the ultimate anti-enthusiast machine. People who view cars as appliances drive Teslas. And don’t quote me 0-60 times, that misses the point by a mile. |

Guys, respect his position, it's his right to get the Tesla, plus it's his money and he's had an M340i already. Let's not start crapping on fellow members choices.

As far as getting the Plaid, the wait times on those are only one month because they don’t sell much of them and it’s more profit. A regular Model S has a wait until 3rd quarter 2022. |

But I get to say that it’s a really weird decision to cross shop an M car and a damn anti-enthusiast appliance like a Tesla. It just makes no sense, that’s all. No intention to hurt feelings here, it’s just cars we are talking about, so…. Speaking for myself, if I couldn’t get an M car I would WAIT for one. Never in a million years would I buy a Tesla instead. There are other options. Tesla for me isn’t an option. That’s me, obviously you all have your own opinions—no offense intended to anyone. |

But at least it makes noise. And when that AWE exhaust arrives, it will make more noise! Last edited by TupperBMW; 12-06-2021 at 08:07 AM.. |

One other thing that is annoying about BMW is the whole anti-tuning thing going on with them. I get it that it could cost them money with people working the system if their engine goes up based on a tune but as an enthusiast, it takes the fun out of owning it.
I had lost a bunch of features from a software update at one point and didn't realize it at the time and I sent my ECU across the country to get it flashed and it was impossible for me to get those features back by taking it to get the software updated again while keeping my tune and locking my ECU again. So I basically lived with less features because of it. Now that I detuned my car so I can sell it, I took it in for the software update and all the features are now there again. The Plaid will be my daily driver, I still have my GTR if I want to drive an ICE car on the weekend. |

I have both X3M comp and M340i xDrive. Both are 2020. The X3M is a conundrum to me and definitely a niche vehicle that isn't for everyone. There are scenarios where it feels bumpy and rough one moment and then reasonably compliant the next. To me it's one of those cars I enjoy but passengers might not. It truly is an M3 on stilts. If you haven't driven one, it is a vastly different experience than the M340i. For comfort and gas cost, I've gone back to M340i for my 40 mile round trip daily commute and other than weekend adventures, I'm enjoying the M340i slightly more.

2022 X3M Competition Brooklyn Grey Black Alacantra w/Midrand beige 892M wheels Thankfully my used to be daily 30 (each way) commute is now zero (WFH) so gas milage wasn't too much of a factor. Can't wait for the car.

Also have quality parts to get rid of (795M wheels, DP, JB4, etc). If you or anyone is interested, send me a message.
