5k isn't necessary - except for oil filter. But since you're getting it done for free; why not? I have oil change set for 7,500. If your tire was wearing mostly likely has something do with the tire pressure.

My previous 2 bimmers had 2 years/15k miles OCI, so I went with mid-OCI, around 6k to 7k.

The current G20 has 1 year/10k miles OCI, I am going to stick to that, probably will end up with 8k to 9k-ish OCI each year.

Yeah 5k sounds a little too early.

Since OP already took delivery on a specific in-service date, the VIR/key data needs to match that date, or else there is something wrong.

As suggested in post#12, OP should confirm in-service date with service.
yes, it would be nice to know the in-service date as that starts the clock on the maintenance plan coverage.

It's about when the car tells you need an oil change. The computer lets you know based on driving habits. I generally have to get a service every 8,000 miles. It's all free within the warranty period!

I paid for the mid intervals. out of pocket. Dealership is free. But I do not trust dealerships. So I have me and my friend do it.

Not full M cars but always felt my B58 and former N54 were high enough performance engines to warrant an oil change immediately post break-in, ~1,200 miles. I'd just get it done.

I have a M340 and will probably get my first oil change right after 1200 miles.

Is factory fill 0-20 or 0-30? In the manual it says use 0-20 or 0-30. Dealers use 0-20 or 0-30?

Does BMW actually cover that oil change after 1200 miles? As we know, the M340i and G80(for example) are quite different in terms of the engine. Maybe it's presumed owners of M cars are harder on the engine/drivetrain?

Anyway, I am going to trust that the BMW engineers know what they're doing and get my first oil change when the car tells me to.

Not to mention the S58 is a twin turbo. I don't think getting an oil change at 1200 miles with our car hurts or helps . I don't think BMW would cover that as part of their free maintenance as it doesn't meet the schedule unless the car was saying to change the oil

BMW covers all scheduled maintenance for 3Y/36K miles. So the 1.2K mile and the 10K mile change would be covered.

Since it is all based on CBS and free the OP should just drop it off whenever the car asks for it. Since is it based on driving and other factors the car decides. For instance, my 530e has 1Y/10K intervals in the manual and now CBS is suggesting 1Y/11K miles (likely due to me doing more and more on electric).

If it wants a change ever 2K miles let BMW foot the bill

Dealer by me will even pick it up and drop it off to you when done. Loaner included if needed...

I'd like to see literature that states those cars are covered free for the 1,200 miles oil change in addition to the 10k miles. All I know is that it's not covered for my M340i. Personally I'm not concerned about not changing out the oil after the break-in period. Again, I put my faith in the BMW engineers that designed these engines and related components and if they feel my engine doesn't need the change after break-in, I'm good with that.

BMW will not cover the 1.2k oil change unless it is a M car OR it has been one year since your last oil change and you only put 1.2k miles on it.

This has been my experience as well.....BMW will not do it so I have had my independent shop do it for my M340i and M440i ......cheap insurance and I am a firm believer in 3,000 to 5,000 mile oil changes......my e39 M5 has had 26 changes since I bought it new...

Helpful thread. Picked up new in September and have 2500 miles on it. Was curious if folks were bringing it in before the 1 year / 10k miles. Seems like there’s some varying opinions on the intervals of oil changes but holding off until the 1 yr mark with low miles sounds pretty normal.

Does BMW flat out refuse changing the oil at 1200 miles even if you offer paying for it?

BMW will always take your money if you are offering to pay for the service. They will refuse to foot the bill for that early of an oil change unless its a true M car since it is under maintenance schedule.
