Description: Quad exhaust tips have been a signature feature of the most powerful letter in the automotive sphere for quite some time. It is a hallmark of the brand that Dinan has long embraced, limiting its own quad tip usage to those M cars that already sported like tip quantity from the factory. That is… until now with the release of the Dinan axle back exhaust system for the G20 M340i and G2x M440i.

While some may scoff at the feature being implemented into a “pseudo-M,” the M340i/M440i, and the B58 engine platform, are extremely potent and worthy of such a distinction. The factory valance also accommodates the four massive 102mm tips perfectly, further cementing our opinion that the quad tips were destined to be on this performance model. Being numerous and big are not the only selling points to the tips however. Dinan has retained its signature straight cut tip design, safeguarding its unique and elegant styling position amongst a crowded marketplace full of angle cuts. With systems available with either black ceramic coated or polished clamp-on, and laser engraved exhaust tips, there is a version that is sure to meet your individual aesthetic needs.

The use of quad tips also presented some additional challenges and fostered some innovation to the already visually impressive system constructed entirely of TIG welded and brushed T304 stainless steel. Confined to dual tips, the factory system utilizes only one exhaust valve and functions by eliminating the passenger side tip when the valve is closed, siphoning all gases through the muffler and out the driver’s side tip for quieter operation. With the introduction of more pipes/tips, this methodology was not practical, or desired. In true Dinan M exhaust fashion, our talented engineering team decided that integrating a second valve to the system would garner the most favorable results in both symmetry and overall sound. The result is a system that incorporates larger 76mm tubing (vs 70mm stock) and allows freer flow through the entirety of the system but specifically to both outer pipes when the enlarged valves are open. The resulting flow and sound mimics an awe-inspiring straight pipe solution with a deeper and meatier tone, a defining element of all Dinan exhausts. In contradiction to the aggressiveness resulting from open valves, when the valves are closed, all gasses are forced into the muffler for sound deadening and exit the two inner tips. Regardless of valve position, the intimate nature of the interior is retained so conversation can continue without an excessively loud drone courtesy of numerous drone abatement technologies in the can. With the Dinan exhaust equipped on the M340i and M440i you get the best of both worlds; aggressive tone/sound and civility. A combination that is a paramount to any M exhaust, and now by virtue of tip count, the M340i/M440i. Welcome to the illustrious family.

Features/Benefits:
  • More Power: Max gains of +6 HP @ 6600 RPM, +5 FT-LB @ 6600 RPM.
  • Enjoyably louder, sportier sound.
  • Quad 4" diameter clamp-on, double-walled laser engraved exhaust tips. Available in ceramic black or polished.
  • 100% 304 Stainless Steel Construction.
  • Larger diameter piping for increased flow (76mm vs 70mm).
  • 4 lbs lighter than the stock system.
  • Stock exhaust valve actuator reused and another valve/actuator added to the opposing side promoting even flow regardless of valve position.
  • Computer controlled exhaust valves are retained and limit noise during low speed driving and open fully during high-load conditions.
  • Twin exhaust valves are a whopping 76mm diameter, making them 30% less restrictive than the OE valves.
  • Easy bolt-on installation with included mounting hardware.

Generally speaking, very few, but there have been exceptions over the years for proven social influencers and various media where it makes sense.

Can you order this through the dealer and have them install it since there's a relationship there with Dinan?

Looks excellent! Too bad it cannot be a port installed option on a new car order!

Totally agree (especially on a lease), I would add this to my order in a heartbeat!

Also, can't wait to see those uuuuge ceramic tips mated below the black MPE bumper trim/diffuser instead of stock gray, would look awesome!

Nothing more than curiosity, but any particular reason why the axleback versus a full catback (and apologies if you've already explained this somewhere)? Looks awesome!

Have not fit it for any EU, OPF equipped vehicles so at this point it should be considered US only.

Mainly because it would just add cost (both in production and shipping) for no actual benefit. There is no resonator or secondary cat to eliminate to get more sound or flow from so we would be adding additional pipe just for the sake of adding additional pipe. Instead we use the factory cut point and call it a day.

with valves open - I'm curious if you (Dinan) can share how much exhaust flow (in terms of percentage - guesstimate please) is bypassing the muffler

Love what you've done here seems like stock at times passing through the muffler and almost straight-piped muffler bypass at full song

Thanks - beautiful work / granted really just for sound - but that sound may just may be worth it to many

ps- our first modded bmw was back in 1987 when we had a dinan chip soldered into the ecu of our 1985 528e - we met Steve at the shop :-)

ps - yes i think we gained 3hp - bahaha - but it was all we had :-) and were thankful for Dinan

Rough guess when valves open are open -- I don't believe more then 10% of the gasses go through the can. This formula (open valves essentially being straight pipe, closed valves going through the muffler for a deeper note but similar volume as stock) we have used to great success over a few of our more popular recent exhausts (F90 M5, F8x M3/M4, M2/M2C) so its a proven formula that most seem to be on board with. Given we change the internals of the cans for each of those systems to combat specific drone tendencies or to get our preferred deeper note but the general philosophy is the same. The big difference with the M340i is the addition of the second valve so it truly behaves like a "real" M exhaust typically would.

For power--- Additional power is technically there at high RPM's but I think everyone realizes at this point that an exhaust is a sound only modification as anything you get from an exhaust is immaterial in the grand scheme of things. Its a grat stat line filler though. =)

The old days of scraping an additional 5HP out of $3000 of hardware modifications were a different era. You had to really work for everything and the process was almost the more enjoyable part then the result. Those only familiar with the turbo era don't appreciate a lot of that which is a shame. Fancy computers and instant gratification. <old man voice> Back in my day if we wanted more power we had to drink some extra strong black coffee and run faster through the floor boards, Flinstones style. I digress... lol

Can't really make out any burbles in the video, are they still there and how do they sound now in comparison?
