I’m interested how you knew the 2021-1 map was available.
Did BMW contact you? Or did you hear from another source?

I downloaded and installed the new version today but haven’t had much chance to check it out, apart from taking the dogs to the vet this afternoon . They were very pleased it worked (not) .

No contact from BMW. I was bored on my computer and decided to open the download manager app and see if there's a new version. I don't know how long it has been available.

It’s rather annoying that BMW doesn’t alert owners to the update, but well done to you for digging it out of the ether!

It's about time. Seriously with my three years included subscription running out in a few months, I'm thinking whether it's worthwhile paying for these infrequent updates going forward. Apple CarPlay is working better now (still occasional dropouts but more liveable than before).

Surprisingly I haven't had any major apple carplay dropouts in the usual spots I was having it previously in Melbourne (toll gates/certain sections of Eastern Freeway and CBD). It does a slight cutout but reestablishes itself before needing to do the whole thing again (iPhone 13 pro). Was alot worse on my Samsung S10+ via Android Auto.

I remember doing a BMW survey for the 1 year anniversary since buying the 330i M Sport in early December and I specifically mentioned around the lack of map updates saying it is disappointing as a service for that.

Now magically we get a update lol.

Updated my maps this morning pretty disappointed as others have said BMW should subcontract out this work to specialist companies like Garmin & TomTom.

I have Driver Assist Professional package which is standard in any X5. A lot of these functions are dependent on the map database containing the relevant information like traffic light location etc and it annoys me I have to pay for something that only partly works in this country.

I have listed the contents of a file that lists the features of the map database that is saved in one of the directories on the USB stick that one uses to updates the maps. My Garmin Nuvi 3490 from 2016 in my opinion is still a better Navigation tool that what is being offered by BMW at present

If I recall correctly, log into connected drive on your computer, go to "my vehicle" and then follow the link to "map update", and then you can download the download manager 😂. Follow the instruction, download the file onto your computer and then unzip into an usb drive. The USB Drive needs to be formatted as fat32. Good luck.

Anyone else having trouble getting the car to do anything (like start the update) after you plug-in the USB? I've tried a combination of different USB sticks and the two formats they suggest.

Mine loaded straight away.
The biggest issue I had was the extractor on the BMW downloader not working and having to use the OS generic expander to put the unzipped files onto the USB.

I think the point the original post was making is that updates are way to infrequent, probably just one a year. We are now in Feb 2022, and i just now downloaded the 2021-2 update. Updates should be available atleast quarterly.

Finally my biggest gripe with the Maps is that it doesnt warn me about speed cameras. A Toyota that I had 7 years ago used to warn me about speed cameras, and they used "Here Maps" too. Yes I am aware of BMWs subscription app but it is not available in Australia.

Voice commands are hit or miss as mentioned by other threads, despite all the hype of the "cloud based" intelligent assistant.

Despite all these, I still use BMWs native maps because I just like the detail visible on HUD, in particular the close view of maps with streets. Just helps me get my bearings right when having to turn on unfamiliar routes (have never been good at judging 100m etc).

Agree with your sentiments those with iDrive 7 appear to get map updates twice a year around June & December My other X5 has iDrive 6 and gets them once a year now and I have to now buy them as the car is well over 3 years old works out pretty expensive as well. BTW Apple maps in CarPlay will also display on the HUD. My personal set up is to use Google satellite maps on the touchscreen and BMW maps in the HUD when I have aSLA active

Has anyone else experienced lots of faulty speed limit information since the latest map update? It seems the embedded data (which is sometimes wrong) are overriding the camera based speed sign detection.

I’ve seen only one faulty speed limit information just before I get to the south eastern freeway.
In this case, the car tells me that the speed limit is 110 kph, when in fact, the speed limit is 80 kph….clearly displayed on large overhead signs.
The speed limit info is particularly weird as the freeway itself has a maximum speed limit of only 100 kph.
This issue has been prevalent ever since I’ve had the car.
Not a problem for me as I know the correct speed limit in this area.

Thanks! I wish BMW can send an email and let their customers know about new map updates.

I'll give it a go today and report here to see if any improvement on the speed limits. Lots of anomalies around where I live with the last map updates.

Speed limit info still wrong on some of the roads that I go on - eg some part of Rosanna Road is fluctuating between 50 and 100 and the actual speed limit of 60 when the camera can read the sign. ☹️

I notice this same issue in that area a couple of weeks ago (Waterdale Rd). Might be something in the air.
