Every update wipes out coding. If you didn't know: now you know I disabled remote software upgrade on my car specifically for that reason. Also when brining in your car for servicing it's not a bad idea to leave a note in the car saying "NO SOFTWARE UPDATE."

One thing I noticed - ambient lighting now pulses for incoming phone calls while connected to Apple CarPlay. Previously the ambient lighting would not pulse when phone calls were received while connected to Apple CarPlay.

What I find interesting is that M3 and M4 owners have something exclusive in the update called "M Sound Control". I can't help but think this is simply sound coming through the speakers inside the vehicle, not actually tweaking the actual engine or exhaust note.

Is the M Sound Control different from this?
https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1815286 I have this coded in my car so trying to understand if we are talking about something else. |

Well I can't seem to get my car to update the software even though it has allegedly been downloaded to my phone. I didn't have to do it through my phone the last time there was an update. It was downloaded directly to my car the last time so not sure why it's forcing me to use the app on my phone this time around.
It tells me I have to be connected to my car via Bluetooth AND WiFi which doesn't make sense to me. Why do I need to be connected through both? I also can't seem to establish a WiFi connection with the car. Pretty sure I don't have a hotspot because IIRC that's only functional for 3 months after purchasing the car then you have to pay for the service (which I haven't). |

You wouldn’t need both to communicate to the car.
Just guessing here. Did you download to your phone over 5G? If so, try deleting the app from your phone. Then down load the app again. Sign in ad you would normally and download software over WiFi to your phone. Then Bluetooth from phone to car. |

When peering my phone for the first time via Bluetooth my phone prompted if I also wanted to use CarPlay: once I selected that option it automatically connected to the vehicle's WiFi. I believe you can manually connect to the car's WiFi along with the password which should be on iDrive. |

You answered your own question.
Corrupted file. Going through the process of deleting, adding back and redoing the process often fixes hidden gremlins that don’t make sense, at least you you. |

The problem here hasn't been determined to be a corrupt file based on the description of the issue. It's one thing if the software upgrade is failing to complete on the car; it's another thing if the car is asking for WiFi and Bluetooth connection. By the way files can still get corrupted over WiFi — WiFi isn't a holy grail.

All true, and not enough info to make any definitive conclusion about what the issue could actually be.
Tim could try many different things to try and fix the issue. We are here to help, and make suggestions. |

Thanks guys for all the input. I haven't messed around with it today just yet but I'll try a few things when I have time.
I didn't download to my phone via 5G (only have 4G on my current phone) which I'm not real clear why it would matter but in any case that wasn't the case. As I had noted in my post last night I thought it was weird to be prompted to connect through both Bluetooth and WiFi. Again, I don't understand why there's a need to be doing this through my phone to begin with rather than a direct download and install to the car like my last update. |

So I did get the WiFi connection to work, actually I did that last night when I was at home and didn't think it was connected but now in hindsight I think it was. I got confused by the language displayed in the message on my phone about not having access to the Internet or something along those lines. Since it was stuck at 0% for so long I figured something wasn't working properly.
Did another quick check while at work and got the same WiFi connection and let it go for a little while and then finally noticed an increase in % of the update so it's working but just sooooooo SLOW. I disconnected after reaching about 45% or so because I don't have the time for that right now. Just in order to transfer the files from my phone to the car takes a long time and THEN it will install. Why not allow us to hardwire the phone if necessary? Better yet, and for the umpteenth time, just download directly to the car!! |

After many many tries. I finally got the update done. So far.. not seeing any real difference.
some tips: Try to do the connection away from your home or work or whereever that you use the wifi frequently. It would keep reconnect to the home wifi and kick you out of the BMW wifi. If you cannot get the "preparation" phase to load, try to delete the phone all together in Idrive and redo the bluebooth and wifi. Make sure the Android auto is deleted or disconnected. All 3 (BT, App, Wifi) should be green on your phone app after that. and the preparation should start automatically after that. I know it says the connection can be interrupted and it will automatically resume. NO, it will not because one of the 3 requirement will be lost. I had to reinstall my phone 3 times because i needed to leave the car since it took forever. The actual installation of the update is easy. Once the prep work is done, you can just shut off the car and follow the instruction on your screen, then lock your car and the installation will be done on its own |

If you know you are doing a 30+ mins drive to somewhere, IMO that will be a good time to do the update.
No one is going to sit in the car for 40 mins just to wait for the preparation files to load to 100%... It took me a round trip commute to work to get everything done. |

In my case, the steps were as follows.
The key points to upload from app to car are android auto needs to be off, BT + wifi need to be up, engine needs to be on.
