Touch screens removed as an option

This was announced yesterday

https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/m...#post-13612126

It sounds like all g20’s, all variants, are having touchscreens removed.

It's for real.

3, 4 series. Z4, X5, X6 and X7. Even M variants of all.

And a pathetic $500 credit. :

I never use touchscreen functionality anyway as it leaves fingerprints over the screen plus whenever you go to touch the screen, you inevitably go over a bump in the road and end up hitting the wrong part of the screen.

I have touch-screen-only in my Palisade (no other manual control) and yes I agree that in some cases it's annoying. Like trying to reach some small button in the far corner. But in other cases (like swapping through screens/options in CarPlay) it's easier with touch screen, so having both is a good balance IMO.

It sucks though that with the touch screen they're also removing backup assistant functionality.

How can we tell if it’s been removed from the build? Is it showing yet online?

I'm with you here. I previously had an Audi and they went touchscreen only for their MMI. Kinda turned me off. I hope BMW keeps the idrive controller going forward.

Guess I picked literally the worst time to buy/build a car. All these removed options that are basic parts of cars now kinda makes me wish I never got rid of my car last week lol. I remember wishing my '17 Giulia had a touchscreen, and now I'm buying a 65k car that is also missing one. In 2021. Wild.

The notice did not include Ms. They went by chassis codes so G80/82/83, F95/96 were not included (as of now)

For 3 series it looks like starting with week 44 production
Some 4 series with production week 44 are affected (hit or miss so far)

Fingers crossed. Our M340i started production last week (week 43), so I hope I'm not affected.

For Spartanburg plant, change started during week 43. I was told other factories changed the following week, which is this week.

If your car is in production, you have a VIN assigned. Check the bmwusa site to see if your build sheet was updated to add the deletion. Or use a VIN decoder to look for option code 6UY. If it's there, you have no touchscreen.

You may be correct. I was told M models on same body are included. If so, I suppose the notice from BMWNA will be updated. We shall see.

This really is not good for people who are affected. Especially those who ordered and have been patiently waiting for their vehicles to be built.

I wonder what the used car landscape will look like 2+ years from now. Will these MY21-MY22 vehicles all be noted as "beware of missing features"? SMH.

Let's hope this mess is sorted by the time typical MY23 production begins.

Wishful thinking but this shortage has no easy solutions, a lot of articles are saying it could be 2023 before improvements will be seen. Supply chains were stressed before covid and this is a perfect $hit storm affecting chips, manufacturing, transportation, and pretty much everything else.

Well aware! That doesn't mean one can't voice their displeasure, however. It is what it is, but it also sucks. We all custom ordered for a reason—we wanted a car built to our exact specifications. Of course we'll all live if some things get axed from the build, but let's not pretend like it isn't frustrating.

Is anyone affected by this planning on keeping their order? I’m just curious if people plan on canceling or keeping

I'm hoping I'm not affected, but if I were, I probably would not cancel assuming that all functions can be accessed without the touch screen, and given that I'm not a touch screen fan.

Does anyone know if this is something that can be corrected at a later time?

I sure wouldn’t. I’d cancel my order and I’d suffer that ugly ass Tesla first and enjoy the hell out of 3 second 0-60’s

If the front end of the Tesla wasn’t so butt ugly I’d already have one in my driveway

I think I would cancel as it says touch screen and backup assistant but I can’t see how parking assistant will work either as that uses the touch screen
