Dashcam
Any recommendations re a not too expensive dashcam guys? Do they make them which don’t have a wire dangling down to the charging socket? Any help appreciated.

According to this the best dash cam is the Nextbase 622
https://www.t3.com/news/best-dash-cam I’ve got a Nextbase 322 or 422, can’t remember, is all singing all dancing for my needs (mainly mitigating any accident/shunt). I’ll post a pic tomorrow if I remember on how it’s mounted, but essentially it’s on the far left of the windscreen, just above the dash. I’ve routed the power cable so that it’s practically hidden, down to the carpet, under it and around the back of the passenger seat, up to the centre console and the usb power supply. This is in my other car and it took me a bit of trial and error positioning to find the ideal spot and cable route. You can have them professionally hardwired or just power through the device charged battery, however there’s then the risk of it not functioning when it’s needed most! |

I just got a cheap, basic one (about £40) from Amazon from a company called Aukey who have probably gone bust since, simply records onto an SD card, no fancy Bluetooth or Wifi, turns on when I drive and turns off when I stop!
As for the wires, I tucked them in behind the interior trim and ran it through the glove box, not amazing but does the job!

Here are some (not very good) photos as promised. I did originally have it located on the passenger side of the mirror, up high, but the sucker pad thingy gave way a couple of times causing the alarm getting set off by the motion sensor, so moved down low to mitigate.
No idea why they’re upside down what am I doing wrong? Last edited by HeebieJeebies; 11-03-2021 at 09:09 AM.. |

Looks like a neat solution. Shame there’s no battery or capacitor for parking mode.
Looking at their website they also do a front and back model, but the resolution is much lower than the 4K available for the front only fitting. |

It is, seems a bit of an odd oversight. Looks big enough to put a Li-Po battery in there somewhere.

With the rear facing camera, I guess we’re back to the old ‘running’ cables scenario, through the headlining probably

Hi Chris, erm, it’s lying unopened at the side of my bed, I’ve just not had the bandwidth to get round to it. I’ll get it opened and post pics before fitting tho

I have a dash cam from next base GW522 or 522GW. I can say, without a doubt, I DO NOT RECOMMEND nextbase. Not for a single second.
Nothing but problems. Me and my brother have the same dash cam in our cars and we both regret it. My other brother on the other hand has a blackvue dash cam and it's amazing, highly recommend. I have bought a new dash cam from kicker starter, some of you may have heard of them. It arrives in January. It's called Dride, I bought it with the rear camera and 4G module. So no matter where you are you can live view the dash cam from your phone and it notifies you if someone hits it. It sounds amazing. You do need to put a SIM card in it for this service though. It also comes with built in memory (optiona" extra) which is also amazing. It sounded like the perfect dash cam hence why I backed the Kickstarter. I also recommend anyone who gets a dash cam to buy an external battery so the dash cam is ALWAYS on (usually around 40hrs battery) and the battery charges whilst you drive. It's very useful as I think parking mode is not very good. If someone hits your car and runs off it takes several seconds to switch on and record. It's usually too late by then. By getting a battery you can always record everything going on. Hope that helps |

I've got a Nextbase 312GW - don't want to have super quality just enough for insurance if need be, and also think it moderates peoples behaviour if they see a cam.
Came with a suction mount which was diabolical. It stuck to the windscreen OK but the rest would always come loose and rattle like hell,. Got a £5 mount off of Amazon with 3M sticky tape, and it's solid as a rock. Run wires under the headlining, down the door trim, under the front passenger carpet and plugged into the rear ciggie lighter, as can't be bothered to get it plumbed in properly
