First oil change

I got a 2021 M340i towards the end of July, and now it's telling me my oil is past due for service / change. The original schedule was saying to get it changed in 11/2021 or at 10,000 miles. I'm only around 3000 miles so far, but that damn warning chimes at me every time I turn on and turn off the car. It first said it was past due on Dec 1 so it must be based on their predetermined time frame.

It seems ridiculous to already need an oil change, so would I be good to wait until at least 5000 or 7500 miles?

If you got it brand new in July (which I'm sure is the case,) then I don't see why it should recommend oil change 4 months later (11/2021.) You're already past due that date which makes sense as to why you're being notified. Anyway, that schedule seems off. I'd bring it in to have the proper schedule programmed.

FWIW I changed my factory oil @ 3k to start on a clean slate: I didn't reset the service schedule since I'll change the oil after the next 7k (when I hit 10k) or 06/22 — whichever comes first. I recommend changing your filter every 5k though.

It's based on the original in service date. Oil Services are free for the first 3 years so why wouldn't you get it done?

OP got the car in July though; so even if there was a service done then that schedule just doesn't make any sense.

He got the car is July, doesn't mean it was a new car in July. 2021 MY cars have been in sales since August 2020.

I think first oil change is based on 1 yr from in service date, or 10k miles, whichever comes first.

If the car was first sold in 11/2020, the in service date started then, and the first oil change is due 11/2021.

You're right. My assumption in my earlier comment was that OP got it brand new in July of this year.

Or if the car was manufactured in 11/2020 and for obvious reasons delayed & etc getting to the dealer, it would all make sense.

Since oil changes are free, I would get it done.

My car's production date was March 2021 per VIR, and was delivered in April 2021.

The first oil change(and most other iDrive items) is based on April 2021(in service date).

The only item tied to production date is brake fluid change interval(listed as March 2024).

I just took my ‘21 M340 2 weeks ago to get an MPE installed at the dealership with 7700 miles and the SA had them do the 1st oil change also. He said no problem to do it well before 10k miles. He told me that alot of clients do an initial oil change after the break-in mileage and go from there. I bought my car in January 2021 so it would’ve been well over a year when I got to 10k for the 1st oil change.

You may bring it to dealer to check, it is possible that the CA(sales guy) didn't correct set the in service date in iDrive.

Also check your key data(service can read your key) to confirm in service date.

Is 11/2020 the production date printed on your car's plaque at driver door jam?

You can check in My BMW app if you have free oil service.
On mine is 7 years/100.000km. It depend which option did you took.
You can buy more years via BMW Store.

Yeah 10/2020 actually, so that must be the reason for the warning light.

One thing to check is if the car was "punched" in 11/2020.

"Punched", or "marked as sold to BMWNA", is common as dealers want to move inventory.

Do confirm with service that the in-service date is the date you took delivery. If not, then the dealer might have sold u a car(produced in 10/2020) that was already punched in 11/2020.

The significance of that is, as u discover, the 3 yr/36k miles free maintenance and 4-yr/50k miles new car warranty start from in-service date .....

May not have been punched as sold. But the PDI determines the clock on the maintenance, so it was likely PDI'ed in November 2020.

PM me the last 7 of your VIN and I can look to see in-service date, etc.

PDI does not determine the in-service date, but the delivery/sold date does.

Hopefully in OP case it is just the selling dealer not recording the correct in-service date(the date that OP took delivery) in the system.

Not quite. In-service date starts the clock on the maintenance plan and warranty plan expiration.

Here's a picture of an M4 Convertible that arrived in November and notice the vehicle status on scheduled maintenance. This car has not been punched as sold (in-service).

Post#19 is a picture of a car that is not yet sold/taken delivery by customer, correct?

Since OP already took delivery on a specific in-service date, the VIR/key data needs to match that date, or else there is something wrong.

As suggested in post#12, OP should confirm in-service date with service.

This is standard for M cars. 1200 mile break in then oil change. I'm surprised they don't have something similar for the M Performance cars like the M340i.

I have mine done every 5000 miles. I have a mechanic friend that does it for me. Even if the recommended is 10K, Had I not done every 5K I wouldn't find out that my Rear tires wears twice as fast. That would've resulted in me buying a new set by next year. I only have 17K miles on it. But since I rotated the tires. It can last a bit longer and will wear better over time.
