All kidding aside, that is an Interesting possibility given the existing BMW-Toyota relationship. Why then keep it under wraps if that were the case?

Great question. I'm assuming BMW's reputation. They classify themselves as a premium manufacturer.

Lexus is also a premium brand. Don't see anything wrong with it and I would welcome a 3 Series in that vein but surely BMW needs to be more open if the G20 indeed has Lexus genes in its underpinnings...

The G20 is based on the CLAR architecture and obviously is influenced by the F30 as well as a bit of G05 and G30 along with a couple flairs. The tail lights are reminiscent of some Lexus tails.
That IS interior is seriously nice. I feel like that's a much better modern interpretation of the BMW "professional" business like interior. And I love that Lexus still uses a conventional automatic shifter. Why exactly must everyone use those electronic shifters? It's not that they're hard. They're just pointless. H pattern is superior of course. |

Really looks like a Lexus from the back.
Even more in real life than pictures. Is not an ugly car, feels too much like a generic car to me. And I don't think the interior was a big improvement, still look the same to me. but I guess I'm the minority. I'll rather have cloth seats and no screens at all... I like the IS interior much better than the G20 The trend of the display instead or the regular tachometer / speedometer is terrible. Overall is a very nice car, I think I'll get used to the new grille. |

Infotainment I'm sure is crap. I'm looking for a F31 M sport myself. I would rather drive a F30 or G20 over the Lexus. Unrelated but can you turn the screen off in the F30 if you want ? |

We also traded in a Lexus IS350 F Sport for a G20. Keep in mind, the Lexus, and now the BMW, are my wife’s DD. I spend very little time in the car and even less driving it. But, here are some of my takes so far:
1) The bimmer is definitely quicker. 2) The G20 interior is more spacious. 3) I preferred the driving position of the Lexus; felt more cockpit like. 4) I preferred the gauge cluster in the Lexus. More simple and straight to the point. The moving map thing in the G20 cluster is pretty useless and distracting. 5) A lot of people on this board bash Lexus styling, but I like it. And a lot of people on here dislike the new G20 grill, again, it doesn’t bother me. But, I’m not a BMW purist through and through, so I’ve never really paid attention to old style grills vs the new one. 6) I did like how the steering wheel moving out of the way when you turn Lexus off. 7) Like mentioned about, the infotainment system is a good decade behind in the Lexus, as it is in all Toyota cars/trucks. The one issue with the G20, strictly on a personal level, is my wife is having a hard time getting used to all the new features in the G20. The Lexus was so far behind, any blind-folded monkey could navigate it...not so much in the bimmer. |

I also prefer the old-fashion shift gate, but electronic shifters do offer some advantages (the use of gear buttons like Acura or Aston is NOT) such as being able to relocate to a simple steering column stalk (such as MB) or automatically shifting into park by shutting off the engine, etc. I wonder also if electronic shifter prevents accidental shifts into park before the car is fully stopped.

I am sorry but that cowcatcher, predictor front end on the IS is hideous. The IS interior looks like they used cement lincoln logs to design and build the dash. Toyota thinks the design shock factor will stand up to the test of time, not...
