BMW at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022 - Including M3 Touring Reveal

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier and despite the typical British summer weather, BMW put on a good show with the reveal of the M3 Touring along with the M4 CSL making an appearance and a couple of stunning BMW Group Classics on the stand too.

The main Stable Yard at the festival was home to BMW i this year.

There was also an awesome collection of McLaren F1's this year too.

Here are my photos from the day.

Looks like people were enjoying the typical British summer's day with umbrellas in hand.. Thanks for sharing. Great photos too. Seems a good time was had by all. Besides the cars it's interesting to see some of the Goodwood estate buildings, the people, the clothes and the cars. Nice post. Great job. I'm not a fan of the M3 Touring though... Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. I see shades of Pontiak Aztek in it.

PS:
That's the first time I've seen that many McLaren F1s gathered together at any event.. Wasn't it shut down for 2 years (2020, and 2021) due to WooFlu?

In a soft tone voice... wow.

That M3 wagon is just fire on wheels. Its amazing how great it looks with a longer roof and now the M performance bits work even better. Long display dash is downgrade though IMO. Otherwise, serious envy to anyone in the region this is available in

Is there anything remotely like this in the States? Maybe one of the days leading up to the endurance races? I would love to see something like this!

I thought about that until I realised that the M3C AWD starts at $182k and the Alpina B3 Touring starts at $152k. Even though it's the previous facelift version, just look at it!

Not really. I was told by a high level BMWNA employee, recently, that way back when the G20 was planned, it had been decided that a touring (wagon) version would not be imported by BMWNA. He stated that decision resulted in a design path that didn't include any accommodation normally done for NA import, and to go back "now" would be prohibitively expensive.

While I appreciate this individual going into a lengthy "reason", with a background ages ago in product development at a large corporation, I actually found it a bit hard to fathom. If it was my organization, I would have never allowed the elimination of the option of a North American version at the outset of a development program. Plans change, the future is unknowable, etc, so you simply don't eliminate the flexibility of a platform to potentially accommodate the largest BMW market.

Perhaps the division executive was under such cost pressure measurements that it "made sense" to go that route...that would be the most likely reason. Save a tiny fraction of your total development costs (i.e. not "making" an NA version per se, just maintaining design flexibility to easily accommodate a change in plans in the future). Still, higher up the management structure, decisions like this one need some clear long term thought of why it might make sense to add a tiny marginal sum to the development program to maintain reasonable optionality going forward 6-7 years time when you have no real idea how things might change...only guesswork.
