It's such a weird cycle with the 3. It comes out. People hate it. Somewhere around halfway through it's lifecycle, people start to love it as they prepare the hate bomb for the new one.

The E46 was the best, then the E90, etc. blah blah blah. if BMW listened to some people they'd still be making the E30.
How about actually "driving" like the e30?? BMW has become the rest, way too looks oriented, too much tech, while neglecting the ole slogan "ultimate driving machine". Disappointing...Please don't give me that garbage "change is good".

What the heck of a hoftmeister kink is that?
Yep, that photo is taken from a very unflattering angle.
The low crease, which turns upwards on the rear door, looks utterly sh*t to my eyes and the 'squared off' vertical edge to the rear bumper is pure Audi. The hockey stick inserts are awful.
Disappointing design. It'll have to drive really well for me to part with my ££
I could overlook everything else, but that lower upward side crease is really ugly and reminds me of this....

So it turns out that the designer responsible for the G20 is Marc Michael Markefka

He also was responsible for the exterior design of the G30 5er and in more recent years the E92/93:

Haha - yeh, I see the similarity
If you select dark enough paintwork, it might mask a lot of the poorer design elements, including the bulbous aspects of the M Sport front bumper, the plain stupid size of the front grills, and that ridiculous lower crease running along the doors
Would not go near this new 3er in a light colour like silver or white

Change is good. The G20 has gotten rave reviews, so let's wait till we try it before passing judgement on looks alone, yes?

I remember when the Bangle E60 came out...Oh the howls of sacrilege and turning their back on classic BMW lines.

Now people pine for E60 lol

Never will please everybody. Final verdict will be the upcoming sales figures.

Yep, it will sell by the boat load - doesn't mean that some elements of the exterior design aren't utter sh*te though!

Point well taken. Not loving some of the exterior design elements either. I do believe the car otherwise will be a better drive than the F30 and the interior layout and quality will hopefully be a step up over the previous 3er. I also believe the CLAR G-chassis are very, very good overall.

Why is nobody talking about the round tires on the G20? ... I mean, WTF? Round? Just like a low rent Kia or Toyota. Until BMW comes out with a more original shape for their tires than round, I will never buy another BMW again!!

That's definitely a very thought provoking post. Now, I won't be able to look at round tires in others cars the same way ever again.

Nothing against the looks, as always referring to mechanics. From what I've read, same ole numb steering with little feedback. I didn't build it, neither did you, opinions positive & negative without getting nasty are useful. Respect👍

I heard the shape of the wheels outside matches the shape of the steering device inside. So unoriginal.

its always the same people too. Its a very vocal minority i'm guessing, and no doubt in 2026 or whatever, they will be saying how timeless the g20 is compared to the H20 or wahtever the next one is called. I can see it now "looks like a genesis, why are we just copying the koreans now". "bmw has lost its way, the car needs to handle like an e30 but with an electric drivetrain", " the hydrogen variant looks too much like toyota's" blah blah blah

I like the front of the 5 and be back of the 3. Hard to tell the difference on the freeway though. They're very similar imo.

while this generation tail lights might look like a Lexus it still looks better than the e90 rear lights which looked like it came off a Kia. In my opinion the e90 was the worst looking 3er. It looked like some Korean corean when I first saw it. yes it drove wonderfully. The new 3er still is an attractive car when you compare it to the c-class and A4 so I am willing to bet most will lease or buy another me despite some of the criticism. not every 3er will be as attractive as the e46.
Be happy that BMW did a better job of it than they did with the 5er and 7serires. They really screwed the design of those vehicles.
