just to revive my original post, I just picked up my 2020 m340i from the dealer today 9/8/20: they replaced the passenger side mirror assembly plus the glass, just like they had to do on the driver's side in my original post
BMW 51169854798 (the motor assembly) list price is around $900 BMW 51169492762 (the heated mirror) FCP euro had it for $160. So it is what I thought, over $2000 in parts just for the two mirrors they replaced Plus the passenger side laser headlight had to be replaced, that is $3000 just for the part. Come on BMW, that is at least $6000 in repairs in the first year of ownership. I love the car but I should have leased. |

a mass produced car is bound to have a few bad ones here and there but from my end I would say that BMWs on a whole have become a lot let prone to issues. You can argue that however our service income would say otherwise. Mini cooper has made a DRASTIC drop in issues, we saw service on those drop an insane amount, those things seem to have become bullet proof.

Even though 75% of a BMWs are leased, I just don’t understand the attraction of leasing and making monthly payments for life. I make one payment at the time of cash purchase and don’t pay any “acquisition fees” for the privilege of financing. Residual and resale is basically one in the same and I’m less concerned about mileage costs.
My current ride is 7 years old and I’m excited for my new M440 to arrive next month. I plan to drive it for 3-5 years and make the leap to EV which should be well sorted out by then. I’ll be in my seventies then so I shouldn’t have too many more new cars ahead, but I’ll drive them like I stole them. Maintenance is just part of the price of owning anything, but since I don’t make monthly car payments, the occasional maintenance cost or repair is easier to swallow. I’ve always found that the bugs are generally repaired under warranty, and if the car is properly maintained it isn’t a problem. Hell, the highest maintenance possession I currently have is my chocolate lab pup, Jack Daniels. I’m going to wish he had an extended warranty. LOL |

Now if I had purchased my car in cash or financed it, and decided to get rid of it in 3 years, I'd take a financial bath (which is exactly what happened with my Infiniti). In that case, leasing makes much more financial sense. Typically (especially with BMW), short term possession favors leasing much more than buying.

I get it, and lord knows I’ve owned far to many cars in my lifetime, but no matter how you acquire it, unless you buy used and let someone else eat the initial depreciation, constantly swapping is expensive.

Agreed - Leasing just happens to be slightly less expensive based on the frequency of swapping.

This is not a Kia: It's a German-made BMW. There are always higher costs involved with owning a more expensive vehicle. If you wanted less risk, you would have leased, however this model is not currently known for being problematic. As for 'that's a kid response,' no it's not. It's can also be the response of someone who's got the money to lease how they like. I own several cars (as listed in my sig) and lease this M340i. I will have it two years and then figure out what BMW has as their latest & greatest toy car. I can afford to do that. Full stop.

If penny pinching is required I'm sure your "financial IQ" would arrive at the logical conclusion a BMW isn't a fiscally wise choice in the first place. It is after all just another car and many cheaper options can fill the void. Although as we are enthusiasts, I assume many on their death beds wouldn't look back and say "I really wish I'd have avoided trying a smorgasbord of fun cars to enrich one's life." Enjoy your lease payment bro. My rental property would pay for mine. I'd rather spend my hard earned money on VIP tickets to Coachella once everything opens up. I'd invite you but you probably have a lease payment to make and I think I'm too crusty for you. |

Interesting you emphasize not wanting to spend your money on a depreciating asset, but then turn around and spend it on something that isn't an asset at all...
