Aftermarket intake, is there a difference?
Hey all,
can someone please explain to me the difference between these two claims? The AFE Momentum GT with the DryFlow filter claims 10% more flow increase compared to stock, and that it outflows the stock intake by 10%. Burger Tuning's intake claims 40% more air than stock and can achieve this by having a larger inlet hose. Both intakes look similar in design, I'm leaning more towards purchasing the aFe intake because I have one for my TrailBoss 6.2L and it's been flawless. Thanks. |

The general consensus amongst the community is that aftermarket intakes are negligible in power increase over stock intake. There are minimal gains with an aftermarket intake over stock, especially if untuned and without upgrading downpipe, turbo, etc. For most, stock intake will suffice. I personally upgraded to the Dinan intake for sound, aesthetic, and out of convenience since I was already also sourcing installation for the AA Catted downpipe. Honestly, if you are looking for an increase in sound, I think the downpipe is probably best. Hit up @mike@x-ph.com if you are looking for a downpipe

Because they open the hood when the do the test with the intake and the dyno fan blows air into the intake. But keep the hood closed when it's the oem intake. Oldest trick in the book.

VM posted a comparison thread years ago with the stock intake vs BMS . VM don't sell BMS intakes; they have no reason to lie or trick customers. The dynos showed an increase in Power (~15 whp) from the intake. I suspect all aftermarket intakes will show the same gains. I have not seen a single dyno showing that the stock intake is better

The problem with a lot of the aftermarket intakes is the open-box design. Especially because the intake is sitting right over the turbo/manifold, it sucks up all the hot air from right in that area in the engine bay. So if you log a car with an intake with an open design, you will see the intake air temps are significantly higher than the stock airbox. This slows down the car because the ecu pulls timing when the IAT's gets too hot. Which it already does without doing anything else. There is a compromise though. Buying an intake with an enclosed design like MST, Dinan, or the new BMS intake will help fix that issue by about 90%. It still raises the IAT's over stock, but it's a negligible amount. I digress, the sounds are amazing with an intake lol.

I bough Dinan intake because I was already taking off stock air box in order to gain access to downpipe on my m440.
TBH, I am a little disappointed and wish I would spend that money somewhere else, such as lowering springs and spacers. I would not recommend getting any intake unless you are running aggressive tune and lacking airflow, but I feel like this will never be the case since stock air intakes are pretty good. If you really want it, maybe Ill even sell you mine cheaper than the new one, it has like 500 miles on it currently.

I have the BMS intake and love it, also tuned so I constantly monitor IAT's all the time, live in Miami where's crazy hot all the time and my IAT's are always between 114-121 so def not making my car run any hotter than the stock intake, the mix in sound from the engine and the intake IMO sound awesome

I ordered and received the OEM air filter to replace the one currently in my car, which is approximately 17,500 miles old. I'll revisit this topic when it's time to replace the filter again. I'll more than likely get the aFe or an inclosed intake vs the open style type to replace the stock intake.
