New Engine Sound setting in iDrive?
On the X3 forum, a poster has placed this picture showing how to access a new setting for Engine Sound, which controls the level of (ASD) sound piped into the cabin.
My M340i doesn't have this, but I'm not on the latest software (I'm on 2019/11.70). If any G20 owner has 2020/03.40 or later, can you possibly have a look and see whether you have this option, and advise ? Thanks

Is there an option for "off"? As in, I don't want any of the artificial engine noise pumped in at all?

There's only the four options you see in the last photo ("depending on driving mode", "sporty", "balanced" and "reduced").
What I heard is that "reduced" is really very much reduced or maybe off but BMW probably couldn't swallow their pride completely and go for the "off" thing. It's a step in the right direction. |

Oh I know you didn’t doubt me. Just confirmed that the older version has it. Weird they removed it in the updated software!
And honestly I haven’t tried changing it. But I will soon enough and update it here.

This https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...ign/1VnYotUIhm suggests strongly that the M340i actually does have ASD. .... or do you have some information that would refute this ?

Damn. Mine is 2019.7.58 or something (definitely not 6x or 70). I’ve had it since day one. So I know I didn’t code it in by mistake. I wonder why yours doesn’t.

Mine came with 7/2019.55 and I don't have that setting. My car came with MPE so I am not sure if the car is programmed with a different ASD setting. I do feel that the ASD isn't as loud compared to some videos I saw with the standard exhaust but I do hear it on mine at the higher RPMs

Hi,
First off, the engine sound menu which is the topic for this thread can be coded into a G20, if you don't have it. Please see the thread titled, "Engine Sound Setting Coding Tutorial w/ Bimmercode" in the DIY & Coding sub-forum. Having said that, I coded it in my M340 and did not hear any difference so I un-coded it. My car has ASD, but it came with it coded already off and I have no desire to pipe in any artificial sounds. Hope that helps!

I’d like to apologise to everyone here. I did in fact code it from g20beam’s thread that RSnic posted above. I totally forgot that I had coded it in (way too many codings done that I lost track). I checked my list of codings done on my phone and realised I had noted it down there. My sincere apologies to everyone.
And yes. In the 330i, it definitely works. G20beam says in his thread that it isn’t the ASD that is being controlled but the valves on the exhaust that is. My valves are open all the time via the canflap option in my JB4. I tested it today on my car and it works. I tried reduced mode and the depending on driving mode options. In the reduced mode, I can just about hear the ASD. It isn’t intrusive at all and the car is silent except for engine and exhaust pops and crackles in sport plus mode. In the drive mode option, the ASD is raucous. I haven’t coded ASD off in my car. I did take a video of the car from inside with the two different options but I’m not sure it can be clearly heard there. I will upload the video to YouTube if I can notice a difference with headphones on and share the link here. Edit - Link to coding here

The ASD module that you are posting applies to the NBT system -look at the wiring diagrams in that technical thread and you will not see any RAM connected to this ASD module. |

Just spoke to BMW's Genius team - basically the engine sound setting on the G20 M340s was taken out on the 11/2019 iDrive software update due to feedback that it was working for some and not for others.
They're not sure if it's re-introduced - but if so, it will be in the March or July software updates. I'm still on the 11/2019 update, so will wait to see. I believe they're bringing it back because the owners manual for a new (May, June factory produced) M340s, have instructions for the engine sound setting modification. |
