Fuel consumption in traffic - BMW G20 330i

Hello guys, I recently purchased a BMW G20 330i 2019 M Sport, and I've noticed that my fuel consumption in city traffic ranges from 15-20l/100km, with no hard acceleration(regular driving) and in comfort mode. I've seen reports of others achieving 8-10l/100km in similar conditions, so I'm a bit concerned.

I've checked for updates, and the last software update was in 2021. Could this potentially be a software issue, or should I be looking into other factors? I want to ensure that everything is running optimally with my vehicle, so any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hello, i’m also driving 2019 g20 330i x-drive but its sport line. Depending on the traffic the consumtion is between 9,5-11l/100km. Most of the time i get 10l/100km. I think that your consumption is way too high. My software version is also from 2021, so i think your problem is somehere else. Sadly I can’t give you any advice. Did you run some diagnostics? First thing that comes in my mind are the fuel injectors. I hope you will find the problem as soon as possible and keep us updated.

Thanks for the response, yes I did diagnostics, everything is ok with that, will try to check injectors and provide updates

To OP, how is the fuel quality in your fuel station?

US-spec requires minimum AKI89, and recommends AKI91, I think your area requires Euro 5 fuel?

Another thing to try is to use Techron fuel system cleaner for a few tanks and see that helps.

Also, what tires come with your car? The BMW star spec tires are designed for mpg, so there are relatively light for RFT. If your 2019 has heavy non-BMW star RFT then the mpg can be impacted.

Hey there,

I'm using Euro 5 with 96.6 RON fuel. Regarding Techron fuel system cleaners, which one do you recommend? I've seen Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner and Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner. Could you suggest one and maybe provide a link to order from Amazon or eBay?

Also, I noticed some odd readings on my dashboard's fuel consumption. On the highway, I'm getting 6-8 l/100km, but in the city, it's shooting up to 14-16 l/100km. And when I'm at a standstill and start moving without pressing the gas, it spikes up to 25-30l (not overall, one which shows the current consumption) momentarily. Even with a slight acceleration, it hits around 20-25l or even more. Is this normal? Some folks claim they're getting 8-10 l in similar traffic conditions. Any insights?

Just wanted to add a bit more context: I recently purchased the car and had it transported to my country, so it had been sitting idle for about 2-3 months before I started driving it.

I use Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner in my location, but I think Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner is just a different name for the same product in other markets.

Your posted l/100km seems normal for highway/city/idle.

Since your car was idle for an extended period, the standing fuel might have collected some moisture.

I would just get down to 3/8(not to empty or else fuel pump will be unhappy) tank and refuel with fresh Euro 5 and your mpg likely will improve.

The readings you're getting (if you're in EcoPro and watching the economy meter on the dash) on pulling away from standstill are entirely normal. My car does the same.

This morning on my short 6.3 km commute in peak hour traffic I averaged 12.1 l/100 km (in Adaptive mode, with stop/start active). By contrast, a 46 km trip I made in light traffic on Sunday, on highway and suburban roads, was 5.8 l/100 km. In the past, I've seen a best of 4.6 l/100 km on a long country trip (250+ km non-stop on very quiet highways).

My overall average so far this month in a mixture of driving conditions, including my daily short commute, has been 8.1 l/100 km. So I don't think you're wildly out. But I agree with Bavarianride's suggestion since your car was idle for a while and also you have no idea what fuel the previous owner of your car was using. I always use quality 98 RON fuel, usually BP or Shell.

P.S. Perth peak hour traffic is not exactly grid-lock, my commute is pretty flat, and it's warm here at this time of year so neither heating nor aircon are doing much. If I were in Sydney traffic or somewhere where you're using your heating or aircon at full blast I'd expect fuel economy to be noticeably worse.

Thanks for your responses guys, I wasn’t in eco-pro mode, in comfort mode theres consumption at the moment, I’m noticing high fuel consumption, ranging from 25-45l/100km, even during gentle acceleration. In traffic, when I release the brake and the car moves without pressing the gas pedal, the consumption remains high, around 20-30/100km. I’m wondering how it’s possible to achieve a consumption rate of 9-11l/100km in traffic with that rates. I’ve included a video link for reference. Can you let me know if you’ve guys have the same behaviour?

You are referring to the instantaneous fuel consumption and it's completely normal to be seeing such high numbers. The lower figures you are comparing to are averages.

Yes I know that, the reason I brought this up is because, even after resetting the trip data, I noticed my fuel consumption in city traffic ranged from 14 to 17 liters per 100 kilometers. This raised concerns for me, especially considering that others have reported nearly half of that consumption in similar city traffic conditions.

Don't worry too much about readings while accelerating, just monitor the average consumption of city driving between fill-ups.

How many liters have u filled up so far after the extended non-operation? And have u tried the Techron yet? U may need use Techron(at least the 20oz size) for a tank or two fill-ups to effectively clean up.

When you see the 14-17 l/100km average fuel consumption, what's the average speed?

Filled full tank, ordered Techron yesterday, will update you as soon as it arrives, thanks for responding.

Normal then, that's pretty much a traffic jam.

Agreed - I checked, and my 15 minute commute in Perth peak hour traffic mentioned below, where I averaged 12.1 l/100km, was at an average speed of 24.8 km/h. Today I came to work later in lighter traffic and averaged 11.3 l/100km at a speed of 25.4 km/h. My 5.30 am drive to the river to go rowing before work today was 11 km at an average speed of 55.3 km/h and consumption was just 6.5 l/100km.

So I don't think your car is wildly different to what would be expected. See how you go when you've run a couple of tanks of additive, and use good quality fuel in future and you may improve it a little. A good long blast out in the country to blow away the cobwebs might help too!
