J.D. Power: the most dependable MY2016 vehicle on the road is the Porsche 911
According to J.D. Power's annual study (currently reviewing model year 2016)...
Porsche 911 Always amazed with Porsche's reliability combined with Legendary performance. Crazy to think you can have your cake and eat it too! Lord willing, I plan to own one someday. Other interesting tidbits and pictures below. http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/resea...=ientp#image=1 Last edited by sspade; 02-13-2019 at 09:11 AM.. |

As someone who currently owns multiple Porsche’s and on my 8th overall they are simply the best cars out there. No one else combines the characteristic of performance, handling, quality and looks like they do.

I'm always amazed by their reported long-term dependability as well, BUT is it really that good or perhaps representative to the others in the field? The reason I ask is because most Porsche owners hardly drive their 911s and Cayman/Boxsters it seems. How many Porsche owners do you know putting 5K+ miles a year on their 911/Cayman/Boxsters? LOL. I'd LOVE to get a later model 911 or Cayman S, but the serviceability of the later model cars is terrible for most DIYers because of engine packaging and the costs to repair are downright astronomical along with specialty tools, and electronics (even worse than BMW). God help you if you had anything go wrong with the motor in a late model Porsche. 80s and 90s era 911s are insanely expensive to fix and it seems like they ALL need motor rebuilds at 80K miles and they leak terribly. Are the later model cars a lot better?

Yes but Porsche then owned up to the issue and slapped a 10-year warranty on those engines and replaces them without much hesitation. Compare that to some other manufactures, including *ahem* BMW, where the F8X has a "known" crank-hub issue yet most dealers won't even acknowledge it, let alone BMW corporate throwing a 10 year extended warranty on those engines.

I’ve had 3 Porsche’s and my dad has one, all four extremely reliable with no major repairs. Something like 95% of all Porsche’s ever built are still on the road today which is pretty amazing. They also hold their value insanely well after the initial big depreciation hit. I had two 991s, sold one for $25k more than I paid for it and drove the other for 2 years and sold it for $9k more than I paid for it.

The biggest question is: 10, 15 and 20 years in the future, will all that electronic s*** work?

Well, Porsche doesn’t just throw useless tech into cars like many manufactures and in a study not long ago the conclusion was that Porsche has the highest percentage of cars still on the road today since 1980.

Now that we are on the topic...
What would you true Porsche guys recommend as a first one? Clearly used for my pocketbook. Say under $30-35k Would rather be in something modern as opposed to old school sick. Newest Cayman/Boxter I can find? Next step older 911? Would definitely be a weekend/road trip car. Would definitely prefer to start with a bone stock, unadulterated vehicle... not counting a factory wheel upgrade or the likes. Been looking for a while but really have no idea what direction to go in and have a feeling its pretty easy to get ripped off or make a bad purchase in the world of Porsche? |

If you decide to go a bit older, the 996 911 is trading pretty low right now. I'm not the biggest fan of the frog-eye aesthetic but they're undoubtably one of the best deals out there.

Useless tech? I'm talking about the fact that cars depend on electronics so heavily, porsche has all sorts of wizardry going on to control all sorts of stuff, if you don't think so, you're being naive. The rear computer unit on my BMW just "gave out" one day, rear hatch wouldn't open, all rear lights wouldn't work, rear windows wouldn't work, driving modes wouldn't work, the entire rear half of the car just stopped working. Luckily, it was still under warranty, but again, 10, 15 years down the road? It seems like we keep getting pushed towards disposable stuff so we are forced to keep buying...

I disagree completely to say that JD Power is complete BS. Its obviously a very real research company that has been around a while and is very widely respected in the auto industry from a CONSUMER standpoint... again cant say whats going on behind the scenes. Do you actually think they employ hundreds of people to make up bogus statistics and at the end of the day, its all about what manufacturer pays more? I highly doubt thats the case. These are real people compiling real statistics. Thats not to say the benefit of doubt could be given to one manufacturer over another in certain circumstances where ratings be incredibly close but overall.. I feel and believe these rankings and stats are VERY representative of the overall population of vehicles... And at the end of the day, isnt that exactly what they are designed to do? And because something has become a meme doesnt mean it has any sort of validity in the real world. Imagine we all went around living our lives, making decisions based on internet memes!? Im sure some of us do... subconsciously of course |

I think Chrysler products suck. All of them except the Wrangler and mayyybe the right Challenger. Apparently the reason they won was because everyone else literally sucked. All competitors were below average so since the Dodge was average or slightly better it automatically wins. Remember this is about dependability not performance. Still surprised like you since Chrysler products stink! |
