Executive Car of the Year 2019: overall winner

VIRTUALLY ANY NEW BMW carries with it a huge weight of expectation, but even then, few are weighed down quite so heavily as a new BMW 3 Series. But boy oh boy, has this latest one delivered. It has seen off the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class in its price point – a huge achievement – as well as usurped the Jaguar XE as the best-handling car in the class.

The XE has long been held up as the last word in driving dynamics when it comes to executive cars, but the 3 Series offers chassis dynamism that will plaster an even bigger smile across your face. It’s the best-steering BMW of recent times and matches this with stellar body control and plenty of grip. Despite all that, it still manages to serve up a comfortable ride and relaxing refinement when you’re on the motorway.

In addition to making a strong 187bhp, our recommended 320d model’s diesel engine is impressively efficient, while Sport trim gets you a great contingent of standard kit.

Add to all that a class-leading infotainment system, plenty of space front and rear and a comfortable driving position and you can see why the new 3 Series is so deeply impressive.

As for our other price point winners, the Skoda's Superb is cavernous, cosseting and great value, but it won’t set your heart alight when you’re at the wheel, while the Audi A3 Saloon looks the part and is fun to drive but isn’t all that roomy. The new BMW 3 Series, on the other hand, encapsulates all of the attributes required in this market – and then some.

Sure sure. The majority of 3 series buyers don't care about driving experience anymore. 99% of the people buy it for the badge and would buy a 5er if they could afford it. They're building a car to sell to the masses and they accomplished it. They don't care about the less than 1% of us enthusiasts who complain about the size or the lack of a manual or whatever your complaint is.

How likely are you to get cut off by the car, the lack of it's users using blinkers, and the need to show your keys everywhere even though you have keyless entry.

The 99% masses give us 1% a glimmer of hope that the manual M3 / M4 is still alive and our people haulers don't have to be mini-vans.

In the U.K. they like their diesels for some reason. Also the pound has taken a beating recently. So basically every car is 30% more expensive. Thus, the base 3 series gets the 'Executive' label.

Well with M3s, enough people still buy manuals for them to do another version with a manual. The numbers for the f30 weren't good enough to warrant a manual option for the g20

What Car headlines always throw me for a loop. In my head I read the sentence like a Dr Seuss book or something:

BMW wins What Car? Executive car, that's what.

The G80 M3 is poised to garner unanimous votes to be the best in its class like the E9x M3 was based upon the glowing reviews of the G20.

The government changed taxation years ago to encourage lower CO2 hence the diesel love affair. That's now changing again now that petrol are getting more efficient and people are aware of diesel particulates.

The 3 series has always been classed an executive car, absolutely nothing to do with the pound's strength. 5 series are considered large executive and 7s are considered luxury.

Remember this is a UK magazine..

The magazine and generally the market calls the 'mainstream' manufactures eg Ford Mondeo/Vauxhall Insignia etc large family cars.

Then the 3 series/C Class/A4 are called executive.

Of course it all gets more confusing when 'executive' models sell more than 'mainstream' models.. and then you get VW/Volvo who are deemed to be better than mainstream but not quite executive! Although I'd argue Volvo is up there now.

Welcome to the weird and wonderful and not always straight forward UK car market!

Add in that the US market has seen the 3-series as more of an exclusive enthusiasts sedan in past years, whereas in the UK the 3-series has been historically more a 'management' driven sedan, hence the executive reference.
