M340i Recall for Emissions - Anyone else get one?

Just got a letter from BMW today regarding an emissions recall campaign. I have only had this car since June...this is not good. Never expected a recall by now. However maybe just maybe now I will get the new software update. Time to make an appointment.

I just received the exact same letter. I hope this is not related to the other emissions recall that has been documented on this forum, and was rumored to be associated with BMW reducing power output of some early M340s whose engines were producing more than the 382hp due to improper calibration (mine was built in March, received in April). I have not seen solid evidence backing that rumor up, but this emissions recall makes me nervous. I think the Notice reads as if it is something else, but I'm a little bit paranoid about this given the rumors!

"emissions recall campaign" this is when they de-tune the engine

The already elusive exhaust pops on my 330i disappeared completely after an emissions recall here in Canada a few months ago.

Well, if I get the car back and it feels like it has less power, it will be the last BMW I ever buy.

I went in for the camera recall and the software update. Now my car has been experiencing frequent throttle delay in comfort mode which rarely occurred before. Now it's a daily occurrence. As a result, I am skeptical of BMW's recalls and updates.

The M340i was extremely over-rated when it rolled off the production plan, with nearly 400whp in stock form! Yes, you read it right, if you purchased one of the first vehicles in production, then you have near 400whp STOCK car. That is due to the fact that BMW forgot to implement SWT (Tuning Authorization Certificate), and thus customers received a factory-tuned car. But quick, BMW caught onto this issue and implemented a software "fix" that limited your power a bit. This new fix limited your power to 346whp (390bhp) and yet that still was over what EPA/BMW specs should be, so early July of 2019, BMW implemented yet another software fix to bring the car down to advertised 338whp(382bhp). Not only did they lower the power down, but they also implemented a new style firewall against tuning, fully disabling our access to the DME key sectors that we have once used to exploit and be able to flash our own files. After this latest updates, the boot-loader was moved to a whole new protected area that no one has access to. On top of this, all new flashing routines were implemented to ensure that tuners can not modify the existing bootloader, or even access the backup one previously stored in the open area of the ECU.

It's totally messed up, but mine still crackles and pops. Just refuse to do the update.

I was told the flash tunes take this into account and will still work but likely aren't emissions legal. That just means you have to flash back to stock prior to service or smog check which you should do anyway.

Hopefully that's exactly what all of this is, but I'll let you know once I've taken my car in for the emissions recall. I also have the camera recall to do as well.

Letter received today. I'm not due for service until next March and think I will wait until then to do this and the camera and see what software version they are at then.

As of now, everything seems to be working ok.

You should do a dyno run and instrumented 0-60 before and after software update to see if there's a difference.

Yep, and then go crazy on BMW if you can prove they robbed your car of 50+ hp.

My car was built in in May and I am very scared they are prepping to take my extra 50HP away. I am pretty sure I would know the difference. I like how they state: Failure to have this complementary repair work performed could be determined as lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle and may jeopardize your full protection under the emissions warranty provisions.

Nothing like basically threatening us to have this completed.

It's just the emissions warranty not a big deal.

I contacted my dealer's service department. They told me that as long as the car was performimg well and showed no problems, it wasn't necessary to bring it in right away. It would be okay to wait until my next service appointment to have it taken care of.

It's not a very threatening thread when the top of the letter says "Voluntary"....

My wife got the same exact recall letter for her 2019 X3 xDrive30i. Are they going to "detune" her engine too?

The actual text of the letter states that the monitoring of the oxygen sensor heater is incorrectly disabled in the engine management software which means the check engine light (MIL) won't illuminate when the sensor is determined to be malfunctioning, as required by the ODB standards. That means you could have a faulty engine component, but be unaware since no engine fault code was triggered. That's why BMW would like you get the updated software to ensure you don't inadvertently do damage to your engine.
