BMW's stated horsepower is underrated at 382. Most say it's actually above 400, but I'm wondering if anyone has taken the time to find the true spec. Anyone know? Has it been on a dyno?

And not to stir up trouble, but is this rating kept artificially low in order to appease M3/M4 owners who might not like to see a strong engine competing with their premium model? I've been in a few brands which absolutely follow this protocol, but I'm new to BMW.

Doubt the 1st pull for the baseline was stock setup but haven't seen much dyno yet.

According to Joe Achilles review BMW put 'down' (both hp & 0-60) the number lower to protect the gap to M3/M4 (the non-C variant)

They (RaceChip) got it to 442 HP / 581 Nm after tuning. Still well below the non-comp M4.

M4 comp numbers from this video are 501 HP / 653 Nm.

True, but previous generation M4 owners (and it wasn't long ago) are seeing performance closer to the M440i, so BMW is likely being sensitive to them.

I mean, it's not like it was a secret that BMW was continuing to make new cars or that the life cycle for the M4 would be 7 model years. Doesn't make any sense to me to be upset over the brand making new and improved cars as it always has. The G20 M340i nips at the heels of the F80 M3... it's nothing new.

I would think they're trying to make the new M cars look better, rather than thinking about cars that are no longer in production. Even if the full-fat M version were only slightly more powerful than the M40i, it's still significantly different underneath with improved suspension and whatnot. Much different story for serious driving, which is what M cars are more geared towards.
