i8 Successor Could Feature 600 HP and Retain Carbon Fiber Construction

i8 Successor Could Feature 600 HP and Retain Carbon Fiber Construction

Car and Driver has published its speculations on the successor to the i8, based on the Vision M Next concept car, claiming that the halo supercar will feature electric motor at the front axle and a gas engine with electric motor at the rear. The gas engine will be an inline-four. They also believe that the body will remain a carbon fiber tub.
"Following the i8's lead, this supercar will have an electrified front axle and combine a turbocharged gas engine with an electric motor on the rear axle. But here you'll find an inline-four instead of the i8's inline-three. The battery will enable at least 60 miles of EV driving between charges. Combined output will flirt with 600 ponies, so that should address anyone's concerns about the i8 M having the motor(s) to back up its M1 looks.

After BMW sold most of its interest in a Washington carbon-fiber plant, reports suggested there would be no more carbon-bodied Bimmers. We're guessing those reports are wrong. An evolution of the i8's carbon-fiber tub seems inevitable, as the concept shows off unpainted composite sills and trim. BMW may mix in some structural metal, though."

A 4-cylinder supercar? Are they really repeating the same recipe that the i8 used and just adding one cylinder? Will this also have skinny tires and only okay handling as well? Why not harken back to the original M1 and use an inline-6, the brand's bread and butter powertrain that they've been known for for years!

An Audi R8 with a high revving V10 or Merc AMG with its growling V8 seem more appealing to me.

"The hybrid halo car was such a hit the first time around - so lets do it again - only uglier and with BOLD grilles! Wait - I've got it. How about color-blocking areas of the entire side so it doesn't look cohesive at all?"

I'd love to see it (far more than an X8M) but I'll eat my hat if they make it. For years there have been rumours and speculations about a halo supercar, none have come to fruition since the M1.

Carmagazine.co.uk also reporting that the project has been canned after the X8M main article...

BMW have a big investment on a carbonfiber facility..
cant see a reason why they shouldnt use it.. it can be better if they manufacture a totally new turbo engine with some good sound.. they should consult AMG for it..

Mercedes: AMG GT line-up and Project One Hyper Car.
Audi: Audi R8 and PB-18 Hypercar

BMW: "There's no market for it." Let's give'm a four cylinder mild hybrid.

What?

This is going to flop just as bad as the i8 did.

For reference: https://carsalesbase.com/us-bmw-i8/

BMW never sold more than double digits of the i8 in any given month in the US and didn't sell a single i8 in Jan. 2020. Those sales figures are sad.

BMW MNext and BMW X8 will be the bookends for BMW M.

Sad BMW never made a true Supercar successor to the M1 with a V8 or inline 6 without all this hybrid crap.

Thats the one thing Mercedes and Audi have over

Let's hope M Next will be more performance orientated!
i8 had a great design, but not really on par with the sport cars in that price range :

I miss my i8 all the time. If it had 100 more hp I never would have sold it. So 250 extra hp would be extremely intriguing.

Either go full EV or full ICE, this flip flopping strategy led to failure the first time around and will end in the same result the second time.

You make an extremely strong point. When Tesla's New Roadster finally comes to market, that car will make everything else seem stupid by comparison.
