I commute in rush hour traffic 45-60+ minutes each way in my manual transmission M4. Just leave some buffer space to the guy in front of you so you're not on and off the clutch as often.

In my opinion, it's not worth giving up the fun of driving a manual because of a commute. Hell, I'd go buy a beater for commuting before I'd give up that feeling of downshifting to second gear and going WOT.

I also drive 45-60 minutes each way in my manual. My commute is only 11 miles each way, I'll keep my car another 5 years or so but it's wearing on me as fun as it is to drive.

If I can afford an m3 I will definitely consider the manual but unfortunately I am siding towards the darkside

Sadly, the writing has been on the wall about the war on MT's from BMW for quite some time now.

"Screw the minority enthusiasts who prefer MT or RWD exclusively, just keep printing money..."

Well, I'm one of the old timers here . . . been driving BMW MTs since the 80s. This may be the final nail although I'm hoping for one last M3/4 with a MT, but I think that's now more questionable.

BMW is a business and I guess they know what's best for that business. But what they've done is release all the MT buyers to start cross-shopping other brands. We haven't been doing that in the past because BMW was the only MT game in town. Now there's even less to differentiate the brand. I figure BMW has calculated how many of these buyers they'll lose to other brands and figured offering an MT wasn't economically viable. Very sad day for us though.

Question

The world has indeed moved on and left us all clanky old timers behind yearning for 3 pedals with rear wheel drives...

They have shut the doors to us...

Why cater to some demographics but not others?
Is our money no good ?

Life changes, we just have to accept sadly...
Dinosaurs have gone their ways, and so will we...

Keeping my antique 335i then.

At least there is still the Jalop edition... God knows how long...
I am not sure why they even bother....

Essentially what bmw is saying is:
Poor people (young) can drive manual, and eventually down the line once they are old enough with money, they cannot choose to drive the same thing as what they started driving with...

Strange.

No surprise here. Last year sometime in Q3, we got a report of the performance sales YTD by model and the result was of all BMWs sold in Canada, just over 3% were manuals and from M cars, just less than 35%. Canada isn't exactly known for setting trends in the automotive industry but I'm assuming the all the states not named California has the same trend.

What usually happens is when a new model launches and has a manual transmission available, there will always be 1-2 cars available with a manual transmission for that rare person who comes in wanting a for a manual. The rest are all built to order and guess what, we probably see another few orders for the remaining of the life cycle so again, no surprises here.

So you want a manual RWD? Get a 320i with a nice lightweight 4 pot up front for sharper turn in! With close to 200hp (I’m taking the stats above with a large pinch of salt) it’ll be no slouch getting to 60 in around 7 secs and should handle better than the M340i (which will have the extra weight of AT/Xdrive/6 pot!!)
If you must have more power try 330i RWD which will get to 60 in around 5.5 secs (if you can live with AT obviously) for me an M340i AT X drive is not even an option... I’d probably get the imminent X4 (for better practicality) instead!!

BUT... as I said, I’m taking the stats above as pure speculation as in honesty I doubt even BMW themselves have actually signed off all the engine/tranny configurations yet!! The car doesn’t even go into production for at least another 8 months or so... anything can happen between then and now!

Its called an M340 as its what BMW call their "M Performance" model. Its not just a 3 series with a bigger engine. There are other subtle mods to the car over a "normal" 3 series M Sport model/line.

Here in UK we have a M140i (and M240i). This is an "M Performance" model that has things like subtle suspension changes over the normal M Sport and is NOT fitted with run flat tyres. Comes with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Also no front fog lights - like M cars. And one or two other body style changes also I think.

I assume the M340i will follow the same theme as the M140i.

wow 3% nationwide!! I bought my f32 440i in September of last year in Vancouver (love it, no issues 15k in), & I knew I was in the minority but that number is startling!

when i was car shopping in August 2017, there was only seven 3/4 40i models with a 6MT in Canada, so looking back on it, it makes sense.

it's a harsh reality we're being faced with, but i'm more than happy keeping the 440i until it's in the ground

I for one love a manual, I have many, but honestly there is too many upsides to the auto. Even when racing. I love not having to worry about an errant downshift+subsequent spin + overrev. Also a pdk is flat out faster than stick or even sequential. Plus sequentials wear out too fast.
I can't tell you how many manual performance cars out there don't have overrevs on the counter. Hard to find one. Honestly it is a tough problem for a concerned used car buyer.
Yeah I get it, but technology marches on. And lets be honest, the enthusiast probably makes up less than 1% of sales.
Anyway....That way it will always be satisfying to grab an old car that is just car with no extras, no computers etc.

Also if you want an 340 in manual. Just step up to the M3. (If they don't kill that too). Porsche tried.

Manual transmissions are going away for one reason, and one reason only. The take rate is too low. Why would they spend money to develop MT when they are not selling more than 5%? if all the people who calls for MT were actually buying MT, then I'm sure MT would continue. The fact is, lots of folkes like to shout on the mountain top to save the manuals, but are they buying? Nope

With them pulling the MT from the 3 series, I feel like a manual transmission M3/4 is becoming a more questionable.

I think I'm going to end up in a Porsche next.

Lot orders. Pretty sure only suicidal sales guys would turn down customer orders.
