I didn't replace it. It was a chip that they couldn't fix and basically said they will have to replace it... but no rush. It's down the bottom of the windscreen and not in the way. I just haven't got around to it. I should follow it up though.

erawamai,
You are entitled to a genuine BMW screen , don't settle for anything else. If your car was out of warranty then they may insist for an aftermarket screen. A lot of the aftermarket screens are made in CHINA. Call your insurer and tell them you want a genuine BMW screen because your car is still under warranty. Under no circumstances I would put a Chinese anything in my BMW . If I wanted Chinese I would buy a Chinese car. It doesn't matter what brand they use they still will have to take off all the sensors from your old screen and fix them on the new one. |

Mine was just like that. A small chip in the lower black stuff. Parked the car and left it for a few hours to come back see a crack 40cm crack had moved from the chip.

Spoke to BMW (Col Crawford).
They do it in house. Expect $2,800. They need to do recalibration and install a new rain sensor. Apparently you cant just glue it back its a new item and I suspect that's why a lot of people report problems with the rain sensor after having the glass re done. I think I might get BMW to do it and try and get some money from the insurer. Might have to pay an excess to get choice of repairer. |

O'Brien told me that:
bmw get them to do windscreen replacements. O'Brien has the software to calibrate the screen for radar, hud, etc. question is, how does the average punter like me know the screen is genuine and not aftermarket? |

Rang another dealer and they said they do it inhouse. The job takes 2 days and they need to replace the light and rain sensors. Genuine parts etc etc. Last edited by erawamai; 01-17-2021 at 05:57 PM.. |

All sorted
Rang another BMW dealer that also has a body shop attached to the service center. They sent me a quote. Circa $3.5K. They said they do the glass replacement in house. The other BMW dealership I rang said they contract out the glass replacement but do the recalibration themselves. They did not give me an official quote (because I did not ask) but said they did an X3 recently and it came to $2.8K. Spoke to GIO and they said they would pay the difference between the O'Brien quote and the BMW quote. I was put on hold while GIO checked with Obrien. Obrien had no stock and would have to order from Germany. GIO accordingly accepted that the market price is my quote from BMW so agree to pay the full quote. GIO will reimburse once I show proof of payment. |

But yes, not cheap and a thumbs up for GIO top level comprehensive coverage. Very little haggle to have claim approved. Thankfully I swapped to them from Bingle 2 months ago (basic and cheap but no choice of repairer). They will need the car for 2 days rather than Obrien saying they will do it in 90 mins. |

I had my windscreen replaced by insurance about a month into having taken delivery and I thought $2,200 was pricy

I have had the misfortune of two windscreen replacements on my M2. Both times by the original dealer and at $1,300. Most of concern is all the technology that the cars have today attached to the windscreen...both times the job was excellent.

Which BMW Dealer? My is getting done at North Shore. Col Crawford (where I bought mine) were helpful too, but they are a little bit further away from me. |

UPDATE: all the parts are in except the rain sensor. 2 to 3 weeks from Germany.
The crack has now extended half way across the screen so looks like I'm going to be driving a hire car for a bit. |

My windscreen is booked for the 11th with BMW, but I'm not getting the sensors replaced. Will be interesting to see how it plays out. Insurance paid.. eventually.

I've been given a Kia Cerato to drive for a few weeks by insurance. I know it's a rent-a-car but the old engine in that thing is not good. Rough and bad on fuel. It actually uses as much as the B48 but with much less power and sounding very bad doing so. The rest of the package is OK for the price (room, stops, goes, steers OK, suspension tunes OK). |
