It starts with a 3. Last time I tried the automatic system (calling the 1-800 number) it said it would be done in production yesterday, so hopefully that is what is right. Not that I /need/ the car right now ,being down a car just saves me money, but I just want my new toy badly
What's the time frame for a shipment from Mexico?

I'm in transit from Mexico currently.
Brutally slow my car rolled off the line nov 3, just got onto a ship yesterday, finally.... now roughly 15 days to port Jersey vpc with a few stops in between

Ouch.

Mine rolled off the line this past weekend. I was hopeful it might move faster than that...

My experience was sitting at port for about 10 days in Mexico. Loaded on a ship on 10/21, offloaded in Baltimore on 10/30, delivered to Minnesota on 11/9. Once you are assigned a ship you should be able to find the schedule and at least have an idea when it hits Newark. Two or three days through the VPC. Seems like cars get on a carrier quickly after that so your car could hit your dealer a week after arrival. Port installed items will add to the time it spends at the VPC.

Thanks got that info.

Have you had success with calling the BMW # to track it?

More success than my last two. From the time it landed in Baltimore the Genius line was able to give me estimated dates for delivery that were very close to real life. Prior cars the time between arrival at port and arrival at dealership was a black hole. For this car they gave me date ranges, including in and out of VPC and arrival at dealership.

+1

Before loading onto a vessel calling genius and speaking to a person is basically the same as online (once upon a time the in person calls could share more detail), also the online system is much more accurate than it used to be even 3-4 years ago.
After loading the person to person call starts adding value
-vessel name, estimated eta at port
-once at vpc more visibility into estimated etas at dealer

Just called. I got a ship name, and estimated port date.

I liked following along with the ship as it went from port to port.

Since I tracked the damn boat for 43 days I figured I might as well see the boat in person.
Probably get the car in 2 weeks or so.

Awesome! I think tracking the car from factory to port is a cool thing, but your adventure would be a bit over the top.

I work 15 minutes or so from the port so it wasn't really too far out of my way when I was on my way home

I meant the time from Bremerhaven to you. I thought two weeks was brutal. Enjoy the car!

What do you all see as a turnaround time between placing your orders and receiving a production number?

It was a few days. I think I had placed an order on a Saturday and then by the end of that next week I had a production # and VIN.

If your dealer isn't playing games w/ you and actually has an allocation, you will have the production number the same day.

I was concerned about that, but the car has "entered the production queue"!

Order Tracking
Order Received: ?
Scheduled For Production: ?
Production Begins: 08/07
Exterior Body Assembly: ?
In paint Booth: ?
Entering Assembly Line: 08/18 or possibly 08/19?
Assembly In Progress: ?
Quality Check: ?
Final Assembly: 08/20
Ready For Transport: 09/01
Awaiting Carrier Assignment: Possibly 09/11?
Dispatched From Factory: 09/11
At The Port: 09/15?
In Transit: 09/19
At The Dealership: 09/21
Vehicle Delivered: 09/24

Not quite sure of the transport timeline as the dates were changing back and forth when I looked at the updates. Overall the total time from when I placed the order at the dealership, to picking it up at the dealership took approximately 8 weeks.

I'm really enjoying the car, especially the handling of the Dynamic Handling Package. I can't say much of how the handling compares to previous BMW generations as my only baseline is from driving mostly basic commuter cars. I did rent a 2017 Audi A4 before and I can say that the Audi handling does feel a bit loose especially in highway driving. In regards to the 255HP and 295 lb-ft of torque, it is more than enough for my everyday/commuter driving needs. Passing power is good, and the interior is quiet that I forget sometimes I'm driving fast. Prior to purchasing, I debated if I should have ordered the M340i, but I don't feel that I could have maximized it's full potential for every day driving. Plus I would save on fuel cost with the 330i.

Special Ordering a BMW is such a unique and fulfilling experience. It is torture during the waiting process and it does require patience, but the excitement is so much better when delivery day arrives.

Below is a picture of my car during delivery at the dealership. Thank you again Bimmerpost community!

if you call bmw genius they will tell you the date it is planned to complete production. I noticed build steps started completing a few days before that.
