Is the US 2021 M340i also getting a particle filter perhaps? It kinda sounds like my 2020 Sept build G21. No mild hybrid yet, but with two particle filters (OPF) making the exhaust sound like a wet fart.

It’s a real shame this is happening. These models need to have great sound. The other models can be limited, but not these!

Yes. I have a 2018 340i with MPSK, and the 21 sounds like mine.

I have a 2021 G20 on order with the MPE. I'll be happy.

I had a 21 with the MPE it pops and burbles way more then this video shows, it doesn't do it as often as the 2020 but the exhaust is loud and dramatic

I find the MPE too loud . I just want the OEM to sound good with some aggression. I hope the 21 non MPE sounds deep and aggressive. It's hard to tell from the videos

I doubt it because I had a C43 and when I test drove the 2020 back in April I was very disappointed with the exhaust which pushed me to do a factory order solely so I can get the MPE.

You don't need to do a factory order to get the MPE. It's port installed (or even dealer installed) so you could still have it added to any new vehicle.

True but dealers where charging me the full 2k for it and finding the build I wanted was very difficult which was another reason I went with the factory build

MPE is just an Axelback right? That's way too expensive for just sound and no gains.

If my '21 doesn't end up sounding like the various '20's I've driven after it breaks in a bit more (only about 30 miles on it to this point), looks like an aftermarket exhaust might be in my future.

Is there an actual part number difference here for the stock exhaust 2020 vs 2021?

Are people hearing a difference in overall volume and tone at all loads/rpms?

For the stock cars I am hearing essentially the same exhaust volume and tone with the difference being the software driven cold start volume and a reduction in software driven overrun pops

The MPE part number seems to be the same and fitment is not model dependent. (If there were design differences one model would be for 2020s and another for 2021) so for at least MPE customers there will be no difference other than the software driven stuff.

I read in another thread about 11 Owners got together and wrote a letter to corporate and they didn't seem to care. Just responded with something about needing to meet current emissions blah blah and had to make changes.

I love how people think a letter writing campaign will change anything.

95% of people who buy this vehicle will never know, nor realize (or probably even care) that there's a sound difference.

Bottom line: Unless it truly hurts their bottom line, BMW will laugh at these kinds of things. That's just reality.

sorry, i can not agree with you.

i went to the dealer in nov 2019 and did a testdrive. the sounddesign was very important
for my decisision to order the m340i. at that time the m340i had a very sporty sound.
i took delivery in feb 2020 but what i got was not what i have tested and buyed

bmw did not fulfill the contract. An important reason to buy was missing. the sound!
in a very short time i found 20 more customers in our forum and together we sent a complaint.

at one point I agree with you. BMW was not interested in it. the fact that it was a total value of over 1.5 million euros was also not!

Did you sue them? Did you win?

20 customers. Big deal.

Wake me when it's a real class-action.

This is true. Friend of mine took his M5 in for service and got a 2021 M340i loaner. Absolutely zero pops or burbles no matter what you do. And no a downpipe or exhaust won't fix it lol. They detuned the absolute crap out of the new ones. Something to do with the electric motor system in he new ones. Also put my M340i (2020) up against the loaner and found new purple velcro wires in the engine bay so that was new as well. So glad I got a 2020. Stock pops and burbles are more than adequate no need for a tune. Have a downpipe on it as well sounds insane. Feel bad for the guys with the 2021's. Good luck to you guys.

Won't help you can do anything you want to the exhaust. All controlled by dme and computers. They detuned the crap out of the new ones. Best of luck!

if you ask why... it has nothing to do with bmw.
they were forced to that by law.
the only thing you can blame bmw is the bad communication.
they didn't speak openly to us customers. then you feel ripped off.
you want to be taken seriously if you want to remain a customer.

I'm still in shock because the more I drive my '21 the more it pops and burbles more and more. I'm not sure if it's break in that making it sound better. In the high rev ranges I hear a multiple pop/bang sound it's inconsistent, in the sense of after that pop if the car is holding the gear if I give it throttle let off before the the up shift it won't pop. I'll have to wait a couple seconds the rev drop a little give it throttle it pops again.
