I honestly wouldn't have added the MPE option to my 21 540i if it wasn't going to have the pops. I'm very disappointed that I wasn't told this when I ordered. I specifically said that was what I wanted to hear.

Waste of money. Now I need to figure out how to get the sound back.

Huh? I would consider 2020MY a plus in this case.

I distinctly remember the exhaust note on my 2020 M340i changing over the first 5000 miles and settling into a pleasant but not loud enough six cylinder noise with a bit too much artificial after fire.

My F80 with an M Performance exhaust made the right amount of after fire and was dynamic enough that it didn't sound artificial.

What do you mean "shuts off at speed"?

Auto start/stop is literally for starting the engine from a stop.

Just a little confused.
Correct but because it's now a 48v hybrid system, the car will shut off say at 10mph on deceleration vs when stopped, using the hybrid system instead of gas/motor to finish coasting to a stop. If you get back on throttle quickly vs stopping it's not "electric" but for a few seconds it's transitioning back on vs the instant on/off.
I think that may need more explanation. Transitioning for a few seconds sounds horrible.

If I'm slowing to a stop, but then need to accelerate before the stop is complete, it better GO! If there is a "transition" that is anything less than WOT on tap, I wouldn't be happy.

If it's an ECO-MODE thing, that's fine. I use that on specific highway scenarios only.

My bad man I'm an engineer major lol not English. The car will have Instant go when you mash it, one of the reasons for the mild hybrid system. Electric torque while the engine restarts, vs the old system being like your starter just engaging, and that's it. It's almost like driving the i8 in it's electric and gas setting, when you floor it in electric mode and the engine kicks in. Does that make sense?? If not call me and we can do a zoom convo with demonstration haha

It also doesn't shut off every time like in traffic etc, there's parameters to the system and when it does turn off, it's probably not a time you're about to punch it, but if you did you'd still have the instant go. My X3m and f80 are both set to off lol so personally the feature is stupid.

I've noticed this as well since I work with these cars. I even messaged our product rep asking this question almost 2 weeks ago. He didn't reply lol. I have a feeling that this is tied to the new 48V mild hybrid system.

Haha I'm working on that now, so far I can for sure say 21 x3 m40, 21 x5/6/7 m50 and 21 m550/m850. Will check the rest when I get to work tomorrow

Thanks for the comparison.

Besides the obvious exhaust note, anyone else notice there are less cooling fins on rear diff for the 2021 as compared to the 2020?

Yes, it is OPF. Same situation on the M5 Competition. No more pops and bangs on overrun.

It’s a real shame this is happening. These models need to have great sound. The other models can be limited, but not these!

Are you 100% sure about that? I don't think that's accurate and think it's actually the tune and hybrid system

so would you say the stop and go is as good as hybrid (say 330e) if that's the case I would be just fine without the ability to disable it

i have a 2021 m340i and i so far have about 1100 miles on it. at first it didnt pop at all. right now, it pops every once in a while but nothing compared to the 2020 model. kind of underwhelming honestly. cannot wait for bm3 to come out with a tune for it!

Other than not much or any pops how's the overall sound? Is it a nice deep aggressive sound? That's what I care about . Pops and burbles are ok but I can see that getting old after a while but a nice deep aggressive note always sounds good

Not at all.
2020 is more in line with the F3x 40i.
The 2021 is in line with an Audi S

Popcorn exhausts are so overrated. Glad to see BMW clean this up.

You really know how much power is granted to politicians, some of them unelected, when they start controlling the flaps on our exhausts

It's outrageous that as combustion engines make a final salute, we are strangulating the thrill of motoring like this.
