Did a muffler delete on my B46/B48. Here’s what I think.
I was back and forth on wether to do a muffler delete. I couldn’t find any detailed write ups and all the YouTube videos make it hard to know what it will sound like IRL. Decided to just got for it. Worst case I put the oem muffler back or put something aftermarket.
I went to a well known exhaust shop in the LA area called Mikes Performance Exhaust (Team MPE). They did a really good job making custom piping to replace the now gone muffler. All professionally bent and made 100% custom on the spot. MPE is great cause you can watch the whole process. These guys are awesome and take pride in their work. If you decide to do a muffler delete as well, find a good shop that does exhaust! So the important stuff. How does it sound and what is it like to live with? First it’s loud. Anyone that says they’ve done a delete and say it’s not loud is crazy. It’s not as loud as all the slappy Chargers and Stangs on the road but it’s loud. Well sort of I should say. On acceleration it’s loud and you definitely hear it. In low RPM though it’s not very loud at all. So in comfort mode it’s not too bad. Not because of the fuel map but just because the car shifts sooner than sport and so you don’t get up in RPM. No matter what driving mode though, if you floor it, it will make a ton of noise. My biggest complaint is that I really like to drive in Sport mode with manual shifting. I like to hold gears a little longer than most and so I’m hearing exhaust all the time. My main issue though is when I come to stops. I like to downshift but when you are slowing down and the engine is holding around 3k rpm, it drones really loudly. Similarly I like to hold the car in higher RPM even when driving so I’ve always got power on demand and can build boost quickly when I want. Because I like to keep it in the 2500 to 3500 rpm range, I hear a lot of drone. Most of my complaints I would say are due to my driving style but I’m not going to lie, it’s loud. I knew it would be but it’s louder than I expected. I’m gonna give it a couple more weeks and see if it’s too much after living with it for a while. I’m a bit on the fence. On the one hand I love the noise and driving around like a hot boi but I also appreciate being able to just chill while I drive. I’ll report back in a couple weeks. Hopefully that gives you some useful info if you’re deciding on a muffler delete. Hit me up if you have any questions! |

Great writeup, thanks for sharing. Did you have the resonator deleted as well? I'm toying with going that route since I think I'm too chicken to delete the muffler haha

After living with it for a couple of weeks, gotta say, I am pretty happy with the muffler delete. Im trying to find excuses to go drive. Between muffler delete and MSI intake, it makes all sorts of awesome noises. With just the muffler delete it's actually pretty quiet at idle and noise starts to really come on around 1700 RPM. So for comfort mode driving, you just hear it here and there but it never gets annoying. Only thing you can't really avoid is cold starts are loud for a few seconds before idle comes down. Something to think about if you have neighbors that might not appreciate it. Otherwise, its very tolerable to live with and really comes alive when you want it to. Been debating if I want to go and also delete the resonator but I think I am pretty content with the muffler delete only for now. Happy to answer any questions you got! |

Thanks, I think the only thing I have is concerns about is the drone as I drive in Sport by default, but I don't typically hold at a higher rpm as you described above. I have a neighbor with an X5M with MPE so I already hear a loud cold start everyday haha.

I would never do a muffler delete on my car, but thank you for the honest review.
Let us know if you end up keeping it

Did you happen to take pics before & after of the install/muffler delete?

I didn't. I can snap an after pic though. Pretty straightforward Y pipe. They cut the hangars off the stock exhaust and then welded the new Y pipe with the hangars in place. All pretty clean.

OP, I went the same route as you and haven't looked back. I don't even care about the drone; I love how deafening loud the car has become. It feels like it's finally woken up. The tone also became deeper(?)
Oh, and I have done performance mods as well so I can actually go fast rather than becoming the typical ricer Honda Civic |

Honestly, I was suprised at how good a MD sounds on the 330i. I was initially super worried about the drone and if it would become a fart can but so far, it's been really good and I have a lot more fun driving

You should have just added an electric exhaust cutout. This way you can use the muffler when you want.
