He is correct. That’s how it’s in my Audis too. They go crazy locking and unlocking when you spray water on the door handle sensors and you have the key on you or nearby.

Thats normal, whats weird are the mirrors doing whatever they want apparently regardless of the iDrive setting.

This sounds like the "convenient" closing function for the car. If you lock the car with a key and keep your finger pressed on the LOCK button, it will close all windows and fold the mirrors in. Crucially it will do this even if you don't select the mirrors "closed" in the iDrive.

What I suspect is happening is the spray from the jet wash is not just opening and closing the car, but is in fact operating the "convenient" function too.

Weird. I use a car wash every couple of weeks and have never had this happen and I have all the bells and whistles.

My mirrors (330e) were acting up a bit; the control panel on the driver door went fully unresponsive (it did not even have lights on it and I could not even open driver window which was kind of pita) for a week, then was ok for a day or two etc. Local official BMW repair shop checked the panel/mirrors during a SW update (iDrive was acting up too) a few days ago and the verdict was that both mirror motors will have to be replaced. There is some shortage on the parts, they managed to order one from Sweden and another from Germany.

Do you stand directly outside the car while spraying the car down yourself? Or are you talking about a regular car wash where you are inside the car or outside the car in a waiting area? Remember, this is a comfort access issue so it's happening when you typically have keys in your pocket and washing your own car.

This happened to me on older cars as well. Obviously at a regular car wash this won't happen. But whenever I went to a coin-op car wash, it would continually lock and unlock the car if I kept keys in my pocket.

The repetitive mirror folding occurs when I’m spraying the car with high pressure water at a self service car wash.

I don’t use automatic car washes with abrasive brushes, so obviously don’t know if it happens there too. Incidentally, I don’t have my dealer wash the car either because they run cars through an automatic wash with abrasive brushes that literally feel like a Brillo pad.

I was specifically asking that other guy because he claims this doesn't happen to him.

I’m guessing he thought the OP was talking about an automatic car wash too. In an automatic car wash, nothing happens (I use touchless wash when it’s very cold outside). When you’re using a coin op wash or a pressure washer and you’re walking around (with the keys in your pocket) spraying around the door handles, cars that have keyless entry go crazy.

Did you get this sorted in the end? This is what’s after happening mine. Luckily it must of reconnected for a bit this morning as the mirrors unfolded and then went dead again

Same problem here on my M340i. Gone in today and been impounded for 10 days as it's considered a safety problem. Part on back order. It happened to my neighbours G21 as well so looks like a very common issue. Just waiting for the rental that's been provided to be delivered.

Car went in today. They are giving it back to me because the mirror motor assembly is on back order and will let me know when it arrives (I don't have an ETA as yet).

I stopped on the side of the road, tried to trigger it using the inside button. Nothing. I restarted the car and nothing still. I just pushed it out and kept driving. Got to my destination and after about 20 mins or so i unlocked the car and it worked again, but it pushed the mirror the wrong way.

Its good now but I have disabled the fold function for now.
Well updating myself on this. I have not been able to stop by but I did make an appointment and nearest date that worked for me was mid March.

The driver side mirror also stopped auto dimming now and the light for the blind spot monitor has also stopped working. Its completely dead now.

I've also had intermittent problems with my passenger side mirror not folding - it seems to fix itself after a few days!

M340i mirror folding

Hi, I picked up my M340i on Saturday and very pleased with it. Parked it up at home and when I went out this morning I found the passenger wing mirror won’t fold out (driver side working fine). I noticed that the mirror won’t adjust either. This would suggest the mirror has no power. Anyway not a great start issues less than 24hrs and the car has 16miles on it!!

Called BMW but with it being a Sunday no technicians available (this is fair enough). I have to drive to to York in the morning and asked should I try and force the mirror out. I was advised not to do this but this has a major inconvenience as I have to drive 150miles with the passenger mirror folded in. I explained this to BMW who suggested getting the train!!! 😡🤐

That’s crazy! Did you try unfolding it manually?

Nope, I dare not force it Incase I break it and void my warranty. I know it's not the end of the world but when you pay almost 50k for a car and it goes wrong the second day it does pi** you off.

I'm going to take it to BMW in the morning and see what they say.?!

The drivers side mirror on my G20 doesn't fold all the way in against the car like the passenger side. It seems to move smoothly when it folds in and out but it is slower than the passenger assembly.

Just to follow up on this point, you can pull the mirrors out and this does not cause any damage.

However when the mirrors are manually pulled out, they do not 'click' into place. I did not bother trying to drive it but I think the wind will be strong enough to push them back in slightly.
