Here in EU we already are punished when it comes to exhaust sounds.
By doing this mod, the sound is awesome. The cold starts are loud, girlfriend immediately asked if I got a new exhaust. Also the neighbors asked about it since I leave at 4am for work... not appreciated by some of them.

Normally the flap only opens (in sport or sport+) when idling or when you step on it...
Now even driving at low rpm it sounds nice and there are way more burbles.
Before they only popped from 3000 and up, now they are also there between 1000 and 2000 rpm.

I dit it like TTG did.

Some pics:

Attachment 2214128
Check if the flap is open.

Attachment 2214129
Unplug and use some electrical tape to protect the connectors.

Attachment 2214130
Use zip ties to finish it off .

I uploaded 2 vids on YouTube, one with the mod and one without it, where you hear opening the flap at the end.

Stock cold start
Mod flap cold start

So to those who are still not sure, just do it

Ow, and I forgot to mention that this does NOT throw a code
Thanks for write up, really clear and helpful!

2 months on how are you finding the sound consistently with the flaps open? Any error codes or loss in fuel economy.

Are you based in the UK? I assume the UK/EU version is exactly the same?

Thanks

I am still happy with the sound of the exhaust .
No loss in fuel economy and no errors.

I live in Belgium, but I guess it's the same as in the UK

I love it and I have recently been in a M340 that had the M Performance system and the sounds differences were minimal IMO.

This is still a great mod with no error codes or lights.

I did not buy the M340 for its fuel economy so I can't help you there. Mine has been consistently getting around 23MPG before and after the mod......mainly city driving in Seattle's bumper to bumper traffic.

Thanks for your replies guys - looks like the exhaust flap mod is a no brainier. No need to upgrade the stock exhaust then!

That sure is my opinion but the guys who have the system already would naturally disagree with me.

M Performance Exhaust was my fav mod on my F10 but I am very happy the way M340 as is.

Just did this mod on a 330i, no errors and quite simple as posted.

Sound is better, but can still the benefit in getting after market exhaust

EDIT: Just realized this was a thread for the m340i haha.

I can’t seem to figure out how to get it unsnapped. Is there some trick or advice?

Has anybody done this with an MPE and notice a difference?

I unplugged mine (I have MPE) a few months ago when I installed a catted dp. No regrets.

Sweet, I have the mpe and wasn't sure if there'd really be any notable difference. I'm going to give it a go.

+1 I was planning on not unplugging it since I have MPE and I kinda of like how quiet it gets when I throw it in comfort for when I'm on the highway for a while.

Thinking about giving it a try to see if I notice any difference in sport.

Did you notice a big difference with a catted Downpipe? Which one did you go with?

I installed the VRSF catted dp. Fairly straight forward install. There are a couple videos out there. I used ramps in my garage and also put a piece of 2x8 under the passenger rear tire for a tiny bit more room. You can hear the turbo a little more and feels more responsive but I didn't do any before/after dyno pulls or 0-60 runs. ECO and Comfort are a little louder and better sounding. Sport (+) definitely sounds more amplified and you get more of the pops and gun shots.

The only thing I don't like is how loud the cold start up is. I'm prob more sensitive to that because I leave really early for work so now I start the car with the garage door down and open it after 10 secs.

With all that being said, I love the mods (MPE, dp, flap unplugged). I'll just turn off the cold startup once I decide on a tune.

Anyone else having trouble getting the car to keep open the valve? I tried driving around in Sport+ and even sport and whenever I put the car in park it closes it...

Just started the car, switched into sport + and let it run idle until it opened about a minute or two later.

That's so weird. I just sat next to the exhaust of my idling car in my garage like a fuckin weirdo for 10 mins (the neighbors are always wondering) and it never opened...

Ha that's unfortunate! Well I can definitely confirm that mine opened while sitting idle in Sport + as I waited and watched it open.

Haha yeah lucky me. I'll have to get creative I guess

Edit: Finally got it to stay open, ran the car pretty hard in sport plus on the way home, kept it in sport plus and the valve was open when I parked.

need help....
just unplugged it today on my 2020 m340 with m performance exhaust.
funny thing is that the bass on the stereo was out after doing this and had only mid and treble.
tried start/off multiple times but noting. so plugged back in but still no bass. left it plugged in and turned off the car for 30 minutes and stereo bass is back to normal.

anyone else experience this?

Try unplugging the exhaust valve actuator again? A few people have had their amps go out on them. Not related to the exhaust.

don't understand the appeal of doing this
isn't it better to have control over the valve with the driving modes?
someone please explain so I get it

A free mod for a slightly louder exhaust.
