Pan Am Flight 103 - Lockerbie

Following the release of Abdel Basset al-Megrahi on "compassionate grounds" will the case be put to bed? OR will we ever find the truth behind the Lockerbie bombing?

You can't handle the truth!

I think its sort of a shame that they let the convicted killer go - compassionate grounds or not. To the Libyans and others, Scotland and the EU appear weak.

The same guy, Kenny MacAskill, who freed him allows about 60 people a year to die of natural causes in Scottish prisons. I am smelling something fishy.

Here's the plane after landing in Libya:

amazing - this guy was found guilty of murdering hundreds of people and walks free only to be greeted as a hero. where is the compassion for the families of all who died? sad.

"Your action," he wrote MacAskill, "makes a mockery of the grief of the families who lost their own on December 21, 1988. You could not have spent much time with the families, certainly not as much time as others involved in the investigation and prosecution."

He ended the Lockerbie letter with a frustrated question: "Where, I ask, is the justice?"

President Barack Obama on Friday called the elaborate homecoming in Libya for the freed bomber "highly objectionable."

Television footage showed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's son discussing how he lobbied repeatedly for the return of former intelligence agent Abdel Baset al-Megrahi during trade talks with Britain.

In my opinion, it's a question of law. The scottish legal system does permit compassionate release and that decision rests with MacAskill. That's how simple it is.

A lot of people in the US wont know this, but Ronnie Biggs who committed the Great Train Robbery of '63 was released 2 weeks ago aswell on compassionate grounds which are similar to Megrahi's. This is part of UK law, which I understand might be different from US law, but that's just the way it is.

IMO I'm not sure if he did actually commit the crime. However, I do think it was inappropriate to welcome him back to Libya in such a manner while family of the victims are mourning.

On this matter I have to agree with the comments of Alex Sammond (Scotland's First Minister):

Quote:
“We understand the upset. We understand the disagreement. But we have to do what is right in terms of our legal system, not on the basis of commercial or political interests. That is what we are duty-bound to do. We didn’t do it to court popularity.”
Here's also a good video:

Either Scotland can pay for the approx. last two month's worth of health care for this terrorist, or Libya can.

I can think of one who committed war crimes, had thousand of people killed, refused to stand trial for his war crimes and was received as a hero here in the US and regarded as an allied friend.
