Just bought tix to England for 12 days in Sept. This will be a walking/driving tour with 4 or 5 days in London and the rest touring around the smaller towns. I'm thinking two 16GB CF cards won't be enough. Anyone use a 32GB card? Or should I just grab two more 16s?

I have two 32GB cards and can't imagine going without them. When I travel I clear my laptop's HD and move the keepers to my laptop HD every night. I try to process daily and then upload jpegs to Flickr every day or two. I shoot full rez RAW, plus a low-rez jpeg. I only use the jpeg for previewing and only keep the keeper RAW files and the processed jpegs, but those tend to be pretty large also, from 7MB to 20MB, depending on content.

I've also got a 500GB LaCie external HD to back up everything daily.

I use 16gb cards, but I would switch to 32gb if my budget allowed for it right now... instead I need new brakes for my ride.

if you carry a laptop you don't need multiple 32s

but I also find you fill your cards up faster if you're shooting to the right, so it all depends how you shoot while you're away.

I would consider 1 32 and one of something else just as a backup. If you don't empty your cards at the end of every day, you'll run into trouble, and that's the only time it might be worth having 2 32s.

Just my opinion.

I shot 200 pictures between my 2 cameras today, I was probably about 6-7 gigs total. (many were indoors so a little darker.)

edit*** actually 185 and just under 6 gigs including 2 short videos deleted 24

also, if you are shooting jpeg as well like Dave is suggesting, definitely worth a little extra storage space as well.

I tend to carry a laptop and a spare portable hard drive, and back up on both just in case. I carry the drive in my luggage and my laptop obviously in the laptop bag just in case anything gets separated.

If you don't own a laptop, consider a small 10" netbook for about 100$ you get internet and about 250gb of storage for the same amount of money as a 32gig card.

Thanks, guys. I had planned on bringing my laptop with as much space as possible on it. I also have a small 750GB backup drive. I may grab a 32GB card just in case, though. I won't get another chance at some of the shots I want to take, so I can see myself taking lots of shots of each subject just to make sure I get a keeper of everything.

You've been to London, Dave. Any recommendations? I plan on going up in the Eye. Didn't you say they won't even allow a monopod?

definitely go up in the eye, it's not even supposed to be there anymore, it was supposed to have a 1 year contract originally, but it was extended due to it's popularity. So a lot of people are under the believe that it will not be there forever.

With your 7D,use crazy ISO and keep the speed up. No blur and sharp.Or just use the wide angle and go for dof.

Thanks, Paul. The conference Wifey is attending has an outing planned to Greenwich, so we'll be going along. We went there on our last trip to London some years ago, but I didn't have a decent camera then. The conference is at the University of Westminster and we'll be staying in a hotel in the neighborhood, so most of the other spots should be easy enough to get to. Hopefully prices and attitudes will have recovered from the Olympics by then.

Update (If anybody is interested): They will honor my order! ETA could be between End of june and End of August. (Not really accurate, I know!)

Yay!

I think I found a candidate for MFA on the 7D. My 50mm f1.4 appears to be front focusing by quite a bit. For this image of my cat the center focus point was on the cat's face. The cat is clearly not in focus, but the chair, which is about 2ft closer, appears to be sharply in focus. The cat's face and the chair are 100% crops. High ISO noise aside, the focus is clearly off. I noticed it earlier when I was trying some macros with the 50mm and the 12mm extension. The center aiming point was always slightly off and the sharpest area was just before it.

Full scene (reduced, of course).

100% crops.

it's also looking like the cat on the right is more in focus as well.

Just make sure it's not focus error before you start screwing with the micro focus. Would be a pain to go through all that for it just to be a one time missed focus.

I took four shots. All the same. I'll set up the tripod and do some ruler testing, though, just to make sure.

Looking forward to seeing the shots.
