B-pillar pop/creak

Hi all, since I got my m340i back in August, I've heard a popping/creaking emanating from behind my head in the passenger window area going over bumps. It's worse in the cold now, both sides. It seems to me it's from the b-pillar. I can press against the shadow line trim, especially when the passenger door is open, and it creaks like crazy. Seems like it's just plastic against steel there. Opening window doesn't help like it used to in the F30.

Has anyone had this issue?

You just need to use some dry lube where the shadowline meets the door crease on all doors. That should rectify the problem.

Would GummiPfleger work? Just along all the silicone? Or is there a different kind of dry lube to use along the felt area at the top of the window?

I had similar issue with my Lexus and I took it to the dealer. They couldn't fix it since it was the a result of a manufacturing defect. They blamed it on a malfunctioning welding robot. Since it was related to a weakness in structure integrity, it's a liability. So they took my car, salvaged what they could, and crushed the body since it's too expensive to re-weld it.

Anyway, California Lemon Laws came to the rescue. I got a brand new car (in a different color, even) since I was within the first six months. You might want to get a maintenance appointment booked before your six months is up.

That's what I did on my F30, but this problem is along the vertical part of the door/window frame. I've tired lubing it up, but I would essentially need to get the lube in between the plastic and metal of the frame, and I'm not sure that it would quiet that even if I could. It almost feels like there's a plastic piece under the rubber that is rubbing against the metal. Here's a pic of the area I'm talking about. So I guess it's not technically the b-pillar, but it's vertical part of the passenger window frame?

That won't work. It has to be a lubricant. Hell, even WD-40 can work. The problem always comes back. This temp fix will net you about 3 months of quiet.

Maybe a bit left field.....the passenger seat belt buckle on my G20 rattled against the B pillar when not in use...drove me nuts until I racked it down...easily sorted by moving the weird plastic clip thing on the belt.

Yes! I also wondered what the rattling noise was and it was the buckle hitting against the pillar, literally just had to move it a bit and done.

What parts did you use it for?

No parts. Just spray on the inside track where the shadowline meets the door trim on all 4 doors.

transcendid, did you have any luck figuring this out? I have the same issue. I asked the dealer but they simply showed me how that piece on another car makes the same noise. I took the rubber seal off and applied some lube undernearth, but it didn't do much. Like you said, it's more the plastic on metal that seems to be causing the creaking.

Not yet- haven't had the time to deal with it. Did the mechanics hear the noise while driving your car?

Whenever I have these creaking issues on any of my BMWs, I always just take a slightly damp microfiber and clean all the flocking and rubber seals that touch each other on the doors and frame. This clears up any creaking for about a year.

I believe this happens if you go through car washes that use certain chemicals.

Thanks for the responses guys. They kind of half acknowledged the door noise and said they'd clean up the door seals etc, see if it helps, but they also tried to make out that it's somewhat normal on these cars. The noise I'm getting at this point is not normal. At the time, my car was mainly in for a clicking noise coming from the headliner (which I put in this thread https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1688884&page=2), so since they ended up dropping the headliner for that, that became the main focus and I figured I'd just see how the door noise was after they'd cleaned the seals. It was no better, and has continued to deteriorate. As upsidedownfunnel suggests, I've cleaned the seals and flocking to death at this point and applied gummi pfledge, but it hasn't helped. If I even lightly touch the black trim on the doors, it creaks like crazy. My wife has a 2020 X3, and that area is totally solid on her car, doesn't make a single sound. At this point I'm probably going to pick up some anti squeak tape and see if I can narrow this down further. I'll post an update if I figure it out.

It's so disappointing that this continues to be a problem on the G20. Was really hoping to leave my creaking / clicking / popping issues and greasing / cleaning rubber seals in the doors behind in the F30 at lease turn in.

Was playing around at my kids soccer practice tonight, and may have found the issue. The plastic trim piece that I've circled is pretty loose on both front doors. Wiggling it side to side makes the same noise I hear when I'm driving. I shimmed some folded up paper in the gap where it meets the main door panel (did this on both doors) and the noises were completely gone on the way home. I'm going to show this to the dealer and see what they can do to tighten that piece up so I don't have to drive around with paper stuffed in the doors!

Here's something else that may be worth a try https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...4&postcount=33

UPDATE: alas, the noise came back. Pretty sure it's simply the window moving very slightly in the vertical window track as I drive over bumps. The track is attached to the far side of the plastic piece I circled in the pic above. Maybe it's just got some grease on it or something. I tried cleaning it with a damp cloth but didn't want to use anything too harsh. Dealer said they'd rather look at it instead of me applying something. Taking it in on Friday - will report back.

I'm happy to report the dealer did a great job resolving my issues. I took the foreman for a drive and he could easily see that the piece circled in the pic was loose and the cause of the noise. They removed the door panel and added felt tape around where it meets the door. They also secured the bowden cable while they were in there.

The link I posted above, where the guy tightened up the shiny black trim on his F30, they did that too, and put some padding inside the U shaped channel to stop it creaking.

They performed the above fixes on both of the front doors.

I also had some occasional noise from the passenger footwell, and luckily, it happened on the drive with the foreman. They were able to narrow it down to the glove box door and added some felt inside the door panel as a temporary fix, but they ordered a new one anyway. It's quiet for now though.

So overall, they nailed it, and I'm really enjoying driving the car now!

I made a post about this in another forum. May be useful for this thread if anyone comes across this problem.

I've the same problem, can you solve it? My 330 only has 1000 miles, and that noise its make me crazy. Clearly is the plastic piece into the rubber in the B pillar trim. Thanks in advance for your answer

I adjusted the door, moved it .5 mm closer to the car, using adjustments on B pillar. Rattle dissapeared.
