No power dome, no manual handbrake, no manual competition package? Also, the body lines of the g20 are too bland for me.

Unfortunately the Black (or even carbon fibre) trim around the bottom is a current aftermarket trend even on F8x cars. Not a fan myself.

Ouch

This is probably how I will feel looking at this car for the first time. So many design elements that flat out not only don't look good, but just don't seem to make sense from a design perspective.

Not intended to be hyper-critical, not intended to flame the G8x, not intended to stir up any emotions. Just trying to be impartial. Some design elements look killer on it - the sideskirts, for 1 are just about perfect on the car. The rear actually looks much less JDM than I had feared, and it's a fairly clean and cohesive design no doubt from the leading edge of the rear wheel arches through the back bumper. I don't like the door design on the G30's, and there's not much they can do to bring me into the 'like it' camp, so liking the side profile is a big leap for me already.

The front though. When people are saying, 'it wont be too bad in black', or 'it will grow on you, just wait', or 'it's not as bad as I thought' - those are all losing statements. Of course, with most cars there is one or two colors that are just the tits on the body - but having only one color making the design acceptable to the buyer in question is a far cry from that first color situation.

I've been at the buyers table before with 3 or 4 color choices, unable to decide which one would leave me coming back for more after 2 or 3 years - but that's not what I'd be staring at the face of (HAAA) with this order spec. Matter of fact, this is the same place I am at right now with my next arrival - trying to decide my final spec and paint color. But I've got 3 that I think will all look great on the car itself. One is by far my preferred front-runner, but there's a not-insignificant sum of money between that choice and myself; for my F80, I decided to spend it; for the next one I don't think I am. If Porsche pricing were = to BMW's it would be a paint to sample car, but not for 18k+..

With the F8x, I loved 3 colors, but really wanted the car in a blue - and Yas Marina did not do it for me. I'd have been thrilled with an Austin Yellow car, a Sahkir Orange one, a Tanzanite one, an Alpine White one, or a Mineral Grey one. They all look great, while presenting the lines very differently. There was no 'the car needs to be in this color for me to get past the styling' equation to worry about. And - besides the masochists, who the hell wants a black car?

Maybe some of you can ignore the look when spending this coin, but I cannot. I'm not one to shy away from big ticket auto purchases, but the total package must be delivered for me to pony up - this one just won't do it for me. I'm sure there will be those who drool over it, and to them, all the more power; I hope you find the perfect car for your tastes in the G80.

I didn't realize it was a UDE that people were seeing the G80 M3 at, I've gone to MetLife for the last couple of years so maybe I'll hit it up this weekend. Off topic, but are they running the M340 or M235 GC on the autocross?

Thanks for all the reviews guys. I'm afraid that after reading this and with unknown, later AWD release date the only thing growing on me is Audi RS5.

You're absolutely right about marketing teams getting "in the weeds" type of details incorrect. At M Track Days 2 years ago I was told emphatically the G80/82 would not come in a 6MT. I said "well i follow the bimmerpost forums carefully and even though you work for BMW, I don't believe you." While lacking a certain degree of tact, I was correct, they were incorrect.

Here, there is absolutely no way they would price many people out of a car (or forcing them to by a cheaper version and make less margin) by forcing a $10k option on us. I dont care what the guy in a tent with a badge around his neck says.

I didn't attend my AX session, but I think I saw both the M340 and M235gc's out there running.

Yes, I thought it was only at the Monticello M-driving event, but that's apparently only the new M4, while the M3 is at UDE tour stops.

Thanks for providing this great info!

Any word on the M4 convertible being available in manual? For the 23 of us who would actually consider buying one...

18" wheels on the front, and 19" on the back? Really? I think that would definitely look strange. Not sure why they would go down a size. Why not 19" front and 20" in back like the current F80 CS sizing if they wanted to have offset sizes?

I understand your point of view of not having to settle for a new exciting purchase, but it depends on your purchasing criteria. I want a larger motorsport sedan or wagon that has a manual transmission and this is the only option for a 2021 vehicle.

There is no competition for my purchasing criteria. Looks are not my primary focus, if I still had my F80 I would probably share your same sentiments. I wish I had never sold my F80, because I love 4-door cars with a manual and sometimes you don’t know what you have until it’s no longer in your garage.

Lastly, I am hoping BMW improves on all the new dimensions of the F80, stiffer structure, better handling, EPS steering, turbo engine noise, and new competitors that engage the driver primarily The Quadrifoglio making it an improved M3 dynamically.

Loved the F80’s on 18” wheels when seeing them in person. I am glad they still allow for an 18” front and 19” rear tire. I am sure it will be like the F80 where there are multiple wheel sizes. Probably 20” F and 21” R for those that like larger wheels.

Yes, fully understand the criteria on purchasing is a different sort order for each one of us. If you want seating for 4, 4 doors, 400+ hp and a manual, you've only got 1 show in town.

In shopping for a luxury or non-appliance, I have 3 top tier considerations, that's all:
Can I afford it without upsetting my lifestyle.
Is it enjoyable to drive.
Will it make me look back (happy) every time I park it.

Everything else is negotiable, or dependent on an external factor (I don't need it to carry 4 people because.... or, I dont need AWD because.....).

Ironically I'm limiting myself budget-wise for the next car with the purpose of keeping my F80. Could I plan to sell/trade it and bump my budget ceiling up another 40k - yes, but the worst thing to me would be to want MY car back and be unable to get it. So, if the new one takes my breath away, maybe I decide to part with the F80. But I can't do it until I'm sure.

If the G80 really grabbed me by the emotions when I saw it yesterday, I think all of my upcoming decisions would be a lot easier to stomach on the risk front.

Is it black aero similar to what the GT P-cars as for example the one below have or is the actual body metal painted black?

They are running both cars, you get 2 7/8 laps in each car. Extra lap if you catch the car in front of you!

I think they were actually 19/20" wheels, but now I'm second guessing my memory. Definitely 275 wide up front and wrapped in MPSS.

Agree with many of the comments already posted, some nice detailed write-ups!

Side skirts are perfect, and the rear end looks great. The off center laser/LiDAR sensors in the grill really stands out though. That's the first thing my wife pointed out after a comment about the big grills. I did like the orange interior, but didn't really fancy the IoM Green. The attached render is the closest I could find to the actual color from my point of view.

No I think if it were that matte grey different material look - it wouldn't look so cheap actually. It's not a separate piece or molding that is gloss black.

It reminded me of old-school 80's-90's modscene, where the less well-heeled segments would tape off their own ground effects and paint them a contrast color. It was basically just a gloss black paintline across the bottom section. I would have believed that an owner applied vinyl there if I didn't know any better (and take a close look trying to peel it off!).

I don't disagree here, though not the entire car photo there. I think the color in the metal looked like this photo provided, but in the section below the drivers side grill above the center air-dam. That section of the photo looks fairly close to what I saw as IOM.
