Have there been many engine failures after tuning? Advice on best tune/parts
Hi all, I’m new to the G20 platform, just picked up a 2020 M340 xDrive 2 days ago and it’s nice so far! My question is 2 part - the first of which is about picking the right tune and the second is inquiring about the failure rate of B58 engines with or without a tune.
I want to get a tune but I’m on the fence about which one to get. I was thinking about getting the Carbahn tune and paying the extra for the warranty. I also like that in my area there’s a dealer that has the tool in-house to flash the car without having to send the DME to Carbahn. I have seen people mention MP since Alex was picked to tune one of Toyota’s Supra‘s, but I’ve also heard good things about BM3 and MHD. I’m not looking to set records, but I feel like the Carbahn tune is pretty conservative, relative to these other 3 tuners, so I’ve been thinking about getting something with more power and some customization around burbles. Most importantly, I want to make more power safely and reliably. I’ll probably do an intake and catted downpipe with the tune as well (points if you have the best part suggestions for that as well). What would you choose and why? Secondly, I didn’t really see any threads about engine failures (with or without tunes), seems that’s very uncommon on this platform? I’m coming from the Audi world where engine failures are more common and there are tuners that tend to have more cars blow up, but I’ve really not seen that for this platform, however, I’m reading as much as I can and research everyday but I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts. Thanks! |

If there were, the last thing I would do is post about it on a public forum.

You might want to post this question in the B58 subsection of the F30 forum - only because they have a 3 year jump start on B58 equipped cars vs the G20 and there is a lot of information to be found there :-)
Speaking from personal experience I ran the Mission Performance tune on my 2017 340 for about 25k miles and simply beat the hell out of that car at AutoX events and in the canyons - car never ever skipped a beat in any way, just kept asking for more. I have now transferred the tune to my M340 and much the same :-) |

First of all, congrats on getting your new M340i
I've ran about 10K miles so far with mixed Stage 1 and Stage 2 tune from MP and it hasn't skipped a beat. The only thing I'm constantly monitoring is the temp and making sure the car has enough time to cool off before I turn the ignition off after a hard run. The only times I've got a warning on the car was for low fuel / tire pressure, which still scares the crap out of me with the chime sound. I wish I could offer some more useful data to you with some warnings or issues I've had, but there is none to report at this time :P |

is there a BM3 for the G20 M340i? I called SSR Performance and they told me there is no tune currently reliable on the this B58 platform.
After doing my research im clearly going to go with Alex over at Mission Performance with downpipe + BMS intake which i alrdy got from Mike over at XPH + AWE Exhaust then call it a day. Yes i did lease it but am i afraid? not at all. BMWs are strong platforms and these tuners like Alex put time in to do it right. Its what you are looking out of the car utlimately.

There's BMW technicians on the forums also supporting this claim

Yeah that's what I thought too, you got to pay to play and BMW doesn't want to have lease returns that have been all tuned up, could mess with reliability factors etc and end up with a lot of warranty claims. The safest bet is a JB4 that is taken off when you go to service, I mean if the engine pops you will be on the hook as they will probably detect it's usage but for a lease return they may not go that far scan wise. This is just my opinion gathered from researching here and other forums.
