I bought the M340 bc of the engine. If the next M3 has a hybrid 4 then I'm out.

The only fear I have is that we may be screwed in the future if all the competition choses this path.

What I’ve been wondering lately is if getting a new M5 now is stupid since it will be worth near nothing 5 years from now when non exotic euro eights could be gone forever or if it will be more desirable than ever. I don’t lease so that’s not an option. |

Can I ask why? Your scenario seems like the perfect candidate for a lease. if the car isn't worth as much, then just return it like a normal lease... if it is worth more than anticipated, then you buy it out at the agreed upon residual value. Removes any guess-work, BMW carries all the risk, and you have options at lease-end.

I know this is off-topic, but what did you hate about it? I'm genuinely curious because this is the first time I'm leasing both cars and so far it's been fine.

Everything. The feeling of driving someone else’s car, the mileage obsessing, the forced timing of return, the monthly payments etc. And with all new BMWs I’ve owned the lease was by far the most expensive. No thanks.

My point is that one can make a rather good performance hybrid if one wants to. To date, most companies are making them aimed at folks who want good mileage, not at folks like me who care about the environment, but don't care about mileage, but do want a performance vehicle. Checkout the Porsche 918 hybrid. That car can smoke an M3. |

I think most of us is ok with the idea of having an electric engine to save the air in city driving if we get a six+ cylinder high performance ICE to enjoy with the extra toque fill and boost of electric power when getting on it. A 4 cylinder FI engine though to carry the weight and delivering the 500+ hp expected in today’s performance cars is no bueno. If the ICE is going to be there at all bringing the extra hybrid complexity, dirt and cost of maintenance it has to be worth it for the car enthusiasts and when you are replacing cars with six, eight, ten and twelve cylinders a 4 banger just ain’t. In that case just go full EV. Last edited by solstice; 05-26-2020 at 06:49 PM.. |

I went into crazy depth on what the brand is doing well from the enthusiast's perspective these days and what they are losing at. The gentleman was extremely interested in my feedback. It all boiled down to, don't forget that enthusiasts are the most loyal customers you have and leaving us behind for short term gains will destroy the long-term prospects of the brand itself. I told him no matter what happens, always keep a car like the M2 Comp in the stable or else even BMW will forget where they came from.

I guess the reality is that engines like the B58 aren't going to be around forever as the world moves to EV. Feels to me like this is generation of many manufacturers models will be the last to be powered by the great proper engines.
At some point, they will have to think about how to make hybrids and EVs more exciting rather than just to work as company cars or commuting vehicles which is the reason I'm getting a 330e. Chris Harris did a great video on the new Taycan Turbo and said it genuinely an exciting electric car... Coming from 3 years in Golf GTI's, the new Mk8 is the last of the Golf as their ID3 will take over and that's a car that has been around for nearly 45 years. |

The naming convention doesn’t make sense anymore. So two generations from now it’ll be ///m375e ?
