I saw the Doug Demuro piece on the new Mercedes A-class optional instrument panel and hope this little Gran Coupe has an instrument panel that is if not as sleek at least new and interesting.

Neither is this. And both will have available Haldex awd (primarily fwd until slip is detected.)

Gran Coupe form factor has so much appeal. The 2 series GC will sell very well.

This car would have made perfect sense if it was RWD. That way BMW would have the FWD 1er sedan, for people that want a more practical compact sedan, and the 2er GC would be for people that are more interested in driving dynamics, even if it costs a little extra over the 1er, but don't want a car as big as the new 3er. Keeping the RWD platform would have opened the 2er GC to 6-cyl engines, which I'm sure would've been appreciated as well.

As it is, there's just too much overlap between the 1er sedan and this 2er GC.

Let's not forget that BMW is already developing the small version of the RWD platform for the 2er coupe. So there wouldn't have been any significant additional development costs to have the 2er GC use the RWD platform as well. This switch to FWD platform is only good for cost cutting (which ultimately only benefits BMW, and not the customers).

Mercedes will have the A-Class sedan and the CLA, which are almost identical and equally pointless to me. And I also thought that the 4er GC and 3er GT were pointless too, although the 4er GC at least looked good.

Amen. A RWD based 2GC would've been the perfect daily for me, right in time for when I'd be looking for my 328's replacement.

It sucks.

I like small cars, I found the E46 to be the last properly sized 3er. Our recently departed F30 has not been missed for a second.

However, I'm also 6'2" and have a four year old. There's efficiency in packaging a transverse motor that just doesn't exist in longitudinal layouts, especially when making room for a straight six is required.

I rented an F20 five door and was reminded of how compromised that layout is compared to my Mk7 GTI. The interior is tiny in comparison, leg room is severely compromised and trunk space is tiny in comparison. In fact my friend's F91 feels tight in comparison, aside from having a much larger boot than my car.

Would I make an M2C 5 door work regardless of that? Absolutely. But for a basic, compact family car? Nope, give me a transverse layout and the extra space.

It may not be the car that people think they want, but it's likely the car that people need. Even if it should have been a MINI...

Why would that be silly ? There is already an M240i and an M2 that proves the opposite !

Damn. I was excited for this as I really dislike the G20 but then I read all this FWD foolery.

Although maybe I wouldn't mind an AWD daily? Not that I need it in SoCal but those launches would sure be fun...

Its gonna take a new car being GREAT looking (maybe the new G80 M3?) to make me wanna get rid of the F30 bc I really, reeeeally like that car. If not I'm going the other way down the timeline and getting a V8 M3.

As others have said, BMW really screwed the pooch on this one; yeah the looks aren't amazing (from what we can tell), & yeah, it does seem like a tiny car in today's standards, but if this car had a 6MT and/or RWD and/or an Inline 6, I could guarantee it would totally blow the S3 & CLA 45 our of the water.

In a time where cars are endlessly getting bigger & more disconnected, this could have been BMW's final farewell to the driving experience which made them so famous. I know for a FACT that if it even had one of either RWD, Inline 6, or a 6MT, it would be enough to incentivize buying a 2GC for a lot of people (including me!), & it could have sold very, very well. Simply not enough differentiation between the 2GC & the 1 series as someone else mentioned.

This car could've been the perfect little pit bull, but you do you BMW!

BMW tried rwd with the F20 and F22, generally they lost comparison tests to Audi / VW. The fwd Benzes are awful.

I agree that a small, rwd, manual sedan would be great, but there aren't enough buyers to make it happen. We're lucky just to be getting wagons from Volvo and Audi again, maybe the next round will bring back a rwd, compact sedan.

I think it will have the same interior as the new 3 series, with an optional digital instrument cluster. In addition the 1 series will also have the same interior as the g20 3 series

Completely agree. But most of 2GC will be sold in Europe as 216i/d, 218i/d and 220i/d. Same case with the Mercedes CLA. Those buyers don't care about RWD... or performance

I'm curious what will the RWD 2er Coupe end up like. Maybe with expanding the lineup with the 2GC and 1er Sedan, BMW can make the 2er Coupe an even better car for the enthusiasts. Keep in mind the next 2er Coupe has an internal name "Drift Machine". Maybe there is some hope left. But probably not in a 4-door shape.

Just when you think BMW was ready to re-incarnate the e46, they give us a FWD Mazda 3 type box.

Gahdaaaamitt!

The M2 legend-status lives on!
