Several news outlets are writing about a large update for iDrive 7 which will include Android Auto, mentioning that "the roll-out of this update to BMW Operating System 7 is from July 2020."

The official press release states that "for certain compatible BMW vehicles (...) these great new updates can even be added with a free over-the-air software upgrade, available from third quarter onwards."

As announced by BMW several months ago, all iDrive 7 cars will eventually gain wireless Android Auto support.

Earlier this week, BMW showed off what this will look like, albeit on the yet to be released 2021 BMW 5.

Thought it would be great to start this thread for anyone who has had access to Android Auto on their G20, and if there were any steps necessary to get it to work (e.g. OTA software update, purchase from the BMW Store, dealer provided update).

I'll edit this first post once we find out more, so visitors of this thread know how to get going quickly.

Fingers crossed we'll all get this soon!

I don't think anyone will be able to get Android Auto until they get updated to 7/2020 once it releases.

As soon as I hear it's available I'll be heading to the dealer to get an upgrade done. Don't feel like waiting until December for the OTA to come around.

I've read other posts about a 07/2020 software update, but never found a reliable source that confirms that that version is what will include Android Auto (or if that version will even come to exist).

Do you know more or is this more of an educated guess?

I think because BMW have said it's being released in July we presume the software version will be 07.2020 on new factory cars from that date. So any cars updated by dealers should be upgraded to 07.2020.

It's all just a guess really. BMW hasn't really given us much info.

They have been saying late last year to expect it in summer 2020 and now narrowed it down to July 2020. I just don't see Android Auto being added in randomly but instead included in one of the 3 major yearly updates. I think them saying July isn't a coincidence of it being the same month they are releasing a version but more of them inferring to expect it as a new feature with that release.

BMW apparently organized a press event where Oliver Zipse announced some details about a large software update that includes wireless Android Auto.

Now it makes sense that US finally got OTA update last month. It was possibly just a trial run for the upcoming 2020/07 rollout.

On the plus, it is Wireless Android Auto, which not many other manufacturers have yet. Plus, I don't know of any others allowing Google Maps integration into the HUD.

It looks like we might be in for the rather unpredictable roll out schedule that we're used to:
