It has also seen light taxi cab use in Europe but not to the extent of the E-Class which is the de facto German Ford Crown Victoria.

Nah, the ones who hate the new models are not enthusiasts by any means. In most cases (not all), they have an old BMW (mostly E90s), and they're haters until they get a new one.

Also, across all markets there is this weird 'They don't do it like old days anymore' feeling, which is totally untrue. Most things are way better now that they were in the past. Including BMWs.
For instance E36 had terrible build quality, got 1.5/5 from Euroncap in crash tests (was really really bad in terms if safety), the inline 6 would do like 15mpg, and E36 M3 looked almost exactly the same as the standard E36. E46 didn't have any damping, SMG was a nightmare, it was unreliable. E92: Road bearings and other reliability issues, bland interior & exterior, too jerky in city, etc etc... All of them had caviats, but the number of caviats have been progressively diminished over time.
