It looks like a small 5 series, which in turn looks like a small 7 series. I have no doubt the 2 and 4 will follow suit.

BMW has clearly made the conscious decision to go the Mercedes route with styling. The cars all look fine; but some differentiation would be nice. I don't want size to be the only substantive factor.

Sorry. But there is still too much G30 5er in that render.

It's just the start as I was writing before: there will be updates later on... In the meanwhile, Could you provide some more design information as the mules are still heavily camouflaged? Cheers!

All major car manufacturers especially the Germans have followed this "Russian doll" approach for designing their cars, which is understandable since so much money is at stake and a bad selling car can be a threat to the company...

Porsche (and Audi) for example is the biggest culprit making all their designs derivative to the 911. Mercedes still does the Russian Doll design, but have been very successful IMO by making them more "emotional", especially with their gorgeous interiors.

BMW has become much more conservative since the departure of Chris Bangle. And it is understandable for them to continue in this path because they are setting sales records. On the other hand they are more and more in danger of losing their core enthusiasts by becoming a generalistic manufacturer (with their FWD 1 series, their active tourers and GT's). They are walking on a very tight rope right now...

It's kind of ironic that BMW has become the new MB when Mercedes is becoming more and more sports focused with their AMG division and involvement in F1.

I hope it doesn't look like that frankly. I've seen some other renders (Car Magazine) that look better. Let's hope the final product looks like that.

The question may more be how realistic VS how good... Cheers!

He's not the one inventing this design. There are enough detail under the camouflage and knowledge of BMW's design language to carve out the rest.

This render will be at least 90% accurate to the final design - any potential discrepancy coming mainly from the details of the headlight.

Updated with "pointier" headlight (more like the f30), a more angular front bumper and revised (and sportier-looking) air curtain inspired by the X6M. Also with a sportier look: blackened trim (black kidney, air curtain and window surround) and M359 wheels.

I think it's too early to make a render, but anyway, I think the headlights will be more angular, not just a "smaller" version of the units found on the g30.

Scott posted a render and said it would be similar to it, try taking some cues from it, or let's just wait for a prototype with the final units and body panels/creases/lines appear, which probably won't take long anyway..

BMW uses the 3-series as design template for the rest of the line up, unlike Mercedes which does the other way around (S-class). So I think that the new 3 will have a "Brand new" although evolutionary design language that will eventually be adopted by the bigger models.

I would LOVE to get one of these, ill have to check and see if NA SOP is by July 2018 for my lease expiration. I'll definitely be asking alllll about this next time I'm in Munich.

I don't think you are quite right there saying that BMW uses the 3 series as the design template for their line up. It's not that simple.

Anyway, IMO it's a good thing to speculate a bit and try to guess... And my render is based on an actual prototype not speculative drawings like most mags...

I'll refine my render as we discover more details... But the overall shape is there I believe...

Take a look for example, the headlights connecting to the grills. Started on the f30, and its now, with the g30, in the entire lineup. The design language implemented in every new generation of the 3er eventually spreads to the rest. With mercedes on the other hand, starts in the S-class and trickles down to the smaller models. Anyway, we will see soon enough. Great job as usual.

Yes, but that design language is not used on other newer BMW cars (1-2 Series) ;-)

I have more and more the suspicion that the 3er headlight shape will be similar to this (X2 prototype)...

I thought about that today when taking a closer look at the mule.

Probably not identical but I think that's the direction they are going.
