Will all our computing devices slow down by 30%?!?

Meltdown and Spectre. Scary. I saw this story last night on virtually every news service.

The scare is overblown. All systems will be patched and the exploit fixed. The performance slow down will only impact certain applications and services. Even if it did slow down, they can add more hardware to make up for the speed decrease.

I keep reading that the only sure fire way to address the problem is a new chip.

Yes, it patches the exploit, unless you’re worried about the battery thing. My 7Plus is still running at out of box speeds

I'm staying far away from updating the iOS on my 6s. It's bound to slow down to a crawl.

So after reading that article, seems like the real threat is to cloud services, no personal computers unless hacked. Right?

Apple is offering $30 battery replacements this year. With a updated battery, the iOS updates won't slow down the phone.

My understanding is that you first have to have gained access to the computer in order to run the exploit and extend access. If you are doing all the other things, you increase the level of difficulty for letting someone in.

My 6s actually qualifies for a free battery replacement, but first Apple has to charge me to fix my screen.

Here are a couple of good videos that explain the vulnerabilities and the impact.

Part 1:

Follow-up with testing and benchmarks.

Cliff Notes:
Desktop users and games not really impacted. SSD performance may suffer in some scenarios.
