Okay grandpa.

Go tell that to Ferrari & McLaren, or even the new Vette.

And convertible's? Convertible's what? If you mean soft tops it's ironic how that's the part of a car that shows its age the soonest.

Folding hard tops are alive & well for those who can afford them over cheaper alternatives with tents.

Enjoy your short lived resurgence while global markets reject the tent.

Time and the market will tell what's antiquated like the dial up.
Ragtops are minimalistic and timeless even if you're a punk still in diapers.

I can remember when I prepped you for the E92 moving to a folding hard top. And your were all so against change.

While I personally think going with a soft top is smart, the E90 generation was the heaviest 3 series. The F30 is lighter, and the G20 is lighter still.

I am perfectly happy that the 4er Vert is going to be a Ragtop.

They have like 4 layers now, just about as good as it gets.

I have had three BMW retractable hardtops and have had no issues with the top mechanism on any of them. My Jaguar has a soft top and it has several layers and from inside the car you are not aware that it is a convertible.

The issue with soft tops (and this is definitely an issue on my Jag) is that they tend to have small rear window and very large blind spots.

I for one am thrilled the 4 Series Convertible will come with a soft top. Even with all the camo, I think the pictures look very promising. I fully expect the next "G" version of the 2 Series to only come as a Coupe or Grand Coupe and not as a Convertible. By the time I am ready to replace my M235i Convertible, the new M4 Convertible should be available.

Can't believe bmw ditch hard top setup on 4 series.

The 4 series convertible is looking so good with hard top although it adds more weight than soft top.

Yeah, it's getting lighter, but its waistline isn't getting any smaller, that's what I primarily am referring to. The 3 is the old 5, and one day, it'll be the size of a 7.

You have to go all the way back to the E28 to find a 5 series with similar dimensions as the F30. I know cars are getting bigger, but they're also getting much safer and more powerful. Also, at the rate we're going, we are pretty close to the weight of the E36. The E36 328i which made 190hp is about 100 lbs lighter than the F30 320i which makes about the same power. Yes, the 320i uses a 4 cylinder, but it also uses a far superior 8 speed auto vs the 4 speed auto (or 5 speed vs 6 speed manual). Adding another couple hundred pounds for a 300hp I6 (~50% more power for only <10% more weight), I think, is not a bad deal.

Hi

Which one did you had?
was it under warranty and they have sort out the issues?
I had the 2014 425 convertible and the 2015 M4 convertible.

It makes absolute sense for Aesthetics.
The new cars follow the lead of The 8 buy doing away with flat surfaces. As evident here the rear arches become broader and protrude more adding more mass to the rear of the car allowing a subtle, crisp characterline instead of that three dimensional comet characterline that split the car in two.

The 8 Cabrio shows how these elements will work with the 4er.
With the new Coupe 4er being more muscular than before and sharing nothing whatsoever with the G20.

If they implemented the folding hardtop to this. Then the angular lines of the hardtop would contrast with the more organic surfaces.
Besides the soft-top is lightweight and well layered to protect you from the elements. And can be lowered and raised in seconds even when you are on the move at speeds up to 50km.

This is my least favorite part of the 8er. The rear is SO tall and bulbous, BMW had to pull out all the tricks to visually slim it (giant license plate holder lines, giant contrasting color diffuser, giant ducktail, countless horizontal lines). Even in that pic, you can see how tall and bulky it is from a front 3/4-ish view. It's also being compounded by how skinny the new taillight designs are.

So you're saying we can figure out how to put a man on the moon nearly 60 years ago, but lack the modern abilities to make a decent looking folding roof and should resort to tents?

If you look at Coupe-Cabrio with more organic surfaces with hard tops then you see a flaw, especially one BMW have made the case for not doing this.
Basically the A pillar eventually stretches over the driver, when the driver should be behind it. The Coupe-Cabrio top of the E92 and F32 work in tandem with the cars styling. The deck is conceived to be low and flat.
The new G33 now uses the more organic surfaces as The 8. Rather than the laser cut sharp elements of the previous 2 models. Adding the sharper straight elements of a folding hard top would not sit right on the actual deck.

You think that canvas tent fits the "organic" body lines though? It looks like a Lebaron.

I really enjoy reading Scott's posts, and they all make sense to any move of BMW. Guys, please believe in the automaker you love, they all do the good thing for the company, and customers as well

I always prefer a soft cloth top. It makes the car look more premium that way.

To me the lines of the bodywork with an hardtop never worked. I am happy to see the return of the soft-top, despite certain cleaning issues. Acoustics/insulation should be nearly the same nowadays.
